  • How to Choose the Right Shampoo for Your Hair Type (A Stylist's Guide)

    15 juin 2026

The shampoo question sounds simple until you're standing in front of forty options trying to figure out which one is actually right for your hair. And the problem isn't that there are too many choices — it's that most of the guidance on the packaging is written to sell the product, not to help you understand your hair.

Here's how our stylists actually think about it. We start with one question before we recommend anything: what is your hair asking for right now? The answer to that question points directly to the right formula.

    First: what shampoo actually does

Shampoo cleanses the scalp and hair. That's its primary job. Everything else — volume, repair, colour protection, smoothing — is secondary to the cleanse. If a shampoo doesn't clean effectively, nothing else it claims to do matters much.

The cleanse matters most at the scalp. The mid-lengths and ends generally don't need direct shampoo application — the lather that runs through during rinsing is usually enough for the lengths. So when you're choosing a shampoo, think about what your scalp needs as much as what your hair needs. Sometimes they're the same thing. Sometimes they're not.

Fine or flat hair that needs volume

Fine hair's biggest enemy in the shower is weight. Anything too creamy, too rich, or too moisturising applied at the root will flatten it further. Fine hair needs a lightweight formula that cleanses the scalp without depositing anything heavy at the root.

The shampoo we reach for most: Davines VOLU Shampoo ($43 CAD). It's a volumising formula with Regenerative Organic Certified ingredients that lifts fine hair at the root without any of the coating or residue that makes fine hair fall flat. It cleanses cleanly and lets the hair move. For fine hair that also needs scalp support, the Davines REPLUMPING Shampoo ($47 CAD) is an elasticizing, plumping formula with Plum Fruit Extract that works for fine, limp hair while adding flexibility and body.

Fine hair tip from our stylists: use less shampoo than you think you need. Emulsify it in your hands first before applying to the scalp. And apply conditioner only from mid-lengths to ends — never at the root.

Frizzy, thick, or coarse hair that needs smoothing

Thick or coarse hair needs a formula that starts the smoothing work at the cleanse step, not just at the conditioner or styling step. A well-chosen shampoo for frizzy hair seals the cuticle as it cleans, which means less friction and less frizz before you've even started styling.

The formula we reach for: Davines LOVE SMOOTHING Shampoo (from $18 CAD). It delivers long-lasting anti-frizz action for frizzy, thick and coarse hair — taming the cuticle and adding shine while it cleanses. It's one of the most consistently effective frizz shampoos we carry and it works on fine, medium, and thick hair that runs frizzy. Pair it with the LOVE SMOOTHING Conditioner (from $20 CAD) for the full smoothing system.

For frizzy hair with a smoothing focus, the R+Co BEL AIR Smoothing Shampoo ($47.95 CAD) is another strong option — particularly for colour-treated hair that also runs frizzy and wants UV protection built into the formula.

Frizzy hair tip: rinse with the coolest water temperature you can tolerate. Hot water opens the cuticle; cold water closes it. That final cool rinse makes a real difference to frizz before you've added a single styling product.

Dry, thirsty hair that needs moisture

Hair that feels dry, rough, or coarse after washing is usually asking for more moisture at the cleanse step. A moisturising shampoo uses humectants and gentle surfactants that clean without stripping — so the hair isn't starting from zero every wash day.

For dry hair: R+Co Atlantis Moisturizing B5 Shampoo ($47.95 CAD). Built around Vitamin B5 and a blend of intensely hydrating ingredients, it's a moisture-focused cleanse for hair that feels dry, thirsty, or rough after washing. It cleanses without stripping and leaves the lengths feeling softer before conditioner has even been applied.

For naturally dry or very dry hair that's also colour-treated, the Davines NOUNOU Shampoo (from $18 CAD) is a rich, restorative formula built around Fiaschetto Tomato Extract that feeds the hair structure as it cleanses. It's the everyday shampoo for processed, lightened, or chemically treated hair that needs consistent nourishment at every wash.

Dry hair tip: don't shampoo every day if you can help it. Over-washing strips the natural oils that dry hair relies on. Two to three times a week is usually enough for most dry hair types, with a dry shampoo or water rinse in between.

Colour-treated or highlighted hair that needs protection

Colour-treated hair has two priorities at the shampoo step: protecting the colour investment from fading, and not stripping the hair of moisture every wash. A colour-safe shampoo uses gentler surfactants that clean without aggressively lifting the colour molecules from the hair shaft.

For general colour protection: R+Co Gemstone Color Shampoo ($47.95 CAD). A gentle, tone-supporting cleanse that protects colour vibrancy and provides fade-reducing care for blonde, grey, or highlighted hair. Sulfate-free and formulated to extend colour between appointments.

For colour-treated hair that also needs bond repair built into the daily wash: K18 Damage Shield pH Protective Shampoo (from $20 CAD). It maintains the optimal pH for colour-treated hair, which helps seal the cuticle after colouring and keeps colour locked in longer. This is the shampoo we often recommend after a colour service to protect the work done in the chair.

Colour-treated hair tip: wait at least 48–72 hours after a colour service before washing. The colour needs time to fully oxidise and settle. Washing too soon is one of the fastest ways to fade a fresh colour.

Blonde or grey hair that needs toning

Blonde and grey hair needs a shampoo that does two things: cleanses effectively and manages tone. Most blondes need something that neutralises warmth and brassiness — but not every wash, and not with a formula so pigment-heavy that it dries the hair out.

For warm or brassy blonde: OLAPLEX Nº.4P Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo (from $46 CAD). A concentrated purple toning shampoo that neutralises yellow and brassy tones while delivering bond-building care. Use it once or twice a week, not every wash — rotate with a gentler shampoo in between so the hair doesn't dry out.

For a daily blonde shampoo without heavy toning: R+Co Sunset Blvd Daily Blonde Shampoo ($47.95 CAD). A brightening daily formula for blonde and highlighted hair that's gentle enough for everyday use and adds brightness without depositing heavy purple pigment every wash.

For mineral buildup making blonde look dull: the Davines Heart of Glass Silkening Chelating Shampoo (from $49 CAD) removes hard water deposits and product buildup that regular shampoo can't shift — and often restores brightness that looks like it needs a toner appointment but actually just needs a deep cleanse.

Blonde hair tip: dull-looking blonde is often buildup, not faded colour. Try a chelating shampoo before booking a toner — you might be surprised at how much brightness comes back.

Buildup-prone hair that needs a reset

Dry shampoo, styling products, hard water, oils, and sweat all accumulate on the scalp and hair over time. Even if you shampoo regularly, most everyday shampoos aren't strong enough to fully remove this buildup. A clarifying or deep-cleansing shampoo used weekly or fortnightly acts as the reset — lifting what regular shampoo leaves behind.

Our go-to clarifying shampoo: Davines SOLU Shampoo (from $47 CAD). A deep-cleansing clarifying formula that removes buildup, styling residue, and urban pollutants from the scalp and hair without stripping. It's safe for colour-treated hair and leaves the scalp feeling genuinely clean rather than just washed.

For buildup with bond-building in the formula: OLAPLEX Nº.4C Clarifying Shampoo (from $46 CAD). Deep cleanses product buildup, hard water mineral deposits, and excess oil while maintaining bond-care. Ideal for colour-treated hair that needs a weekly reset without sacrificing repair.

Buildup tip: if your hair feels greasy the same day you wash it, or your scalp feels itchy and coated, you likely have buildup. A weekly clarifying shampoo often resolves both issues within two or three washes.

Sensitive or reactive scalp that needs gentle care

A scalp that reacts to fragrance, colour, sulphates, or simply changes with the seasons needs a shampoo that cleans without triggering further sensitivity. Gentle, low-lather formulas with minimal irritants are the starting point.

For a gentle daily cleanse: SACHAJUAN Hair Cleansing Cream ($73 CAD). A low-lather cleansing cream rather than a traditional shampoo — it cleanses softly, leaves the hair polished, and is well-tolerated by scalps that react to more aggressive formulas. It's a Scandinavian approach to cleansing: minimal, refined, effective.

Sensitive scalp tip: if you're not sure what's causing your scalp to react, come in for an appointment before switching products on your own. Scalp reactions can come from the formula, the technique, the frequency of washing, or a combination of all three — and a professional assessment saves a lot of trial and error.

The one thing every hair type has in common

Regardless of your hair type, technique matters as much as formula. Wet the hair thoroughly before applying shampoo. Emulsify the shampoo in your hands before it touches your scalp. Massage with your fingertips — not your nails — for at least 60 seconds. Rinse thoroughly. The best shampoo in the world won't work properly if it's applied to dry hair or rinsed out in ten seconds.

If you've been using the same shampoo for years and your hair has changed — through colour, hormones, seasons, stress, or just time — it might be worth reassessing. Hair changes. Your shampoo should too.
