K18 vs. Olaplex: A Moda Stylist's Honest Take
If you've spent any time on hair Reddit or TikTok in the last year, you've seen this debate play out hundreds of times. Someone posts a before and after, someone asks what they used, and the thread splits into two camps: K18 or Olaplex. Both are bond builders. Both are professional grade. Both are in our shop and on our shelves at Moda.
But they are not the same product, they don't work the same way, and most of the confusion comes from people treating them as interchangeable when they're actually solving the same problem from two different angles.
Here's how our stylists think about the difference — and how to know which one your hair actually needs.
What bond building actually means
Before anything else: what is a bond builder, and why does your hair need one?
Hair is made of keratin — a protein held together by different types of bonds. Disulfide bonds give hair its structural strength and shape. When hair goes through chemical processes — lightening, colouring, relaxing, perming — those bonds break. The more chemical processing, the more bonds are broken. Broken bonds mean hair that feels weak, stretchy when wet, snappy, rough, or difficult to manage even after conditioning.
Bond builders work at this structural level. They reconnect broken bonds inside the hair shaft — not just coating the surface the way a conditioner does, but actually rebuilding what was damaged. That's why hair that has been through significant chemical processing responds so differently to bond-building treatments than to regular moisture-based care.
Both K18 and Olaplex are bond builders. Where they differ is in the specific bonds they target, how the technology works, and critically — how and when you use them.
Olaplex: the original, and what it actually does
Olaplex was the first brand to put at-home bond building on the map. The technology is built around a single active molecule — Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate — that seeks out and reconnects the broken disulfide bonds that chemical services damage. It's been studied and replicated since 2014 and the science is well-established.
The at-home products work as a pre-wash treatment system. You apply them before your shampoo, leave them on, then rinse. The bond repair happens during that dwell time on the hair.
The products most relevant to bond repair:
Nº.0 Intensive Bond Building Treatment — $44 CAD
Applied to dry hair before Nº.3. It primes the hair by saturating it with active bond-building before the treatment step. Think of it as the prep coat that lets Nº.3 work harder. Best for hair that's heavily processed, frequently lightened, or significantly weakened. If your hair breaks easily or has noticeable damage, start with Nº.0 before Nº.3 every week.
Nº.3 Hair Perfector — from $44 CAD
The original at-home Olaplex treatment. Applied to damp hair before shampooing, left on for at least 10 minutes, then rinsed. Used consistently — once a week for damaged hair, every two weeks for maintenance — it makes a real difference to hair that feels structurally compromised. This is one of the most consistently recommended at-home repair treatments in the industry, and with 103 Reddit mentions and 70% positive sentiment, it's earned that reputation.
The important caveat: Nº.3 can be overused. This is where a lot of Reddit confusion comes from. Using it more than twice a week, or layering it with other high-protein treatments in the same routine, can tip into what's called protein overload — where hair becomes stiff, brittle, and dry instead of stronger. Once a week is enough for most people. Every two weeks is sufficient for hair that isn't severely damaged.
Nº.6 Bond Smoother — $44 CAD
A silicone-free leave-in conditioner that smooths frizz, primes hair for heat styling, and delivers daily bond care. Applied to damp hair before drying. This is the Olaplex product for daily use — not treatment-level repair, but consistent daily support for colour-treated or chemically processed hair that runs frizzy or dry.
Nº.7 Bonding Oil — from $44 CAD
A concentrated finishing oil for shine, frizz control, and heat protection. Lightweight — a very small amount goes a long way. Applied before styling or to dry hair as polish. 86% positive sentiment on Reddit, consistently recommended for smoothing without weight.
K18: a different technology, a different format
K18 launched in 2019 with a different approach to the same problem. Where Olaplex targets disulfide bonds, K18 targets polypeptide chains — the amino acid bonds that form the backbone of the keratin structure. The K18PEPTIDE is a bioactive peptide designed to mimic the natural keratin structure and reconnect broken polypeptide chains from the inside.
The key difference in practice: K18 is a leave-in treatment. You don't rinse it out. You apply it after shampooing (with no conditioner before it — important), leave it for four minutes, and style as normal. It continues working as a leave-in, which means the repair time is significantly longer than a treatment you rinse after ten minutes.
This is why K18 is gaining ground on Reddit in 2025 specifically for chemically processed hair — the leave-in format means it's working continuously, and four minutes is genuinely all the dwell time it needs.
K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask — from $17 CAD
The hero product. Applied after shampooing to clean, towel-dried hair with no conditioner before it — that's the one rule. Leave for four minutes, then style as usual. Don't rinse. For hair that feels weak, rough, stretchy when wet, or damaged from bleach, colour, or heat, this is the most efficient single-product repair treatment we carry. The 5ml size ($17 CAD) is a perfect way to trial it before committing to the full size.
One thing worth knowing: K18 should not be used every wash for most people. Two to three times per week for actively damaged hair, tapering to weekly or fortnightly maintenance once the hair recovers. Like Olaplex, overuse can cause build-up and stiffness over time — more is not better with bond builders.
K18 Damage Shield pH Protective Shampoo — from $20 CAD
A colour-safe protective shampoo that maintains the optimal scalp and hair pH, which keeps the cuticle sealed and colour locked in longer. Designed to be used before K18 Leave-In as part of the K18 system — but works well as a standalone daily shampoo for colour-treated hair even if you're not using the mask every wash.
K18 Damage Shield Protective Conditioner — from $20 CAD
A lightweight protective conditioner for softness, detangling, shine, and daily damage support. Important note: do not use this conditioner before applying the K18 Leave-In Mask on treatment days. The conditioner creates a barrier that reduces the mask's penetration. On treatment days: shampoo → K18 mask → style. On non-treatment days: shampoo → conditioner → style.
K18 Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo — from $20 CAD
A colour-safe detox shampoo for hair that feels coated, dull, heavy, or like your treatments have stopped working as well as they used to. It removes product buildup and residue that prevents active ingredients from penetrating — which is often the reason K18 or Olaplex seems less effective over time. Use once a week or fortnight in place of regular shampoo, then follow with K18 Leave-In on the same wash.
K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil — from $38.50 CAD
A lightweight repair oil for frizz, shine, and heat styling support. Applied before heat or to dry hair as a finishing step. Pairs naturally with the K18 system as the styling and protection step after the Leave-In has absorbed.
K18 HeatBounce Heat Protectant — from $18 CAD
A leave-in conditioning heat protectant with K18PEPTIDE built in — so you're getting bond-building and heat protection in the same step before blowdrying or heat styling. Applied to damp hair before your dryer or tools. A smart choice for anyone who uses heat regularly on already-processed hair.
Can you use K18 and Olaplex together?
Yes — but not at the same time, and not in the same wash. This is one of the most common questions on Reddit and the answer is more nuanced than most threads suggest.
Using both K18 Leave-In and Olaplex Nº.3 in the same wash session doesn't give you double the repair. Both are protein-based treatments targeting bond repair, and layering them in the same routine increases the risk of protein overload — where hair becomes stiff and brittle rather than stronger.
The way our stylists recommend using both:
- Alternate by wash day. Use Olaplex Nº.3 as your weekly pre-wash treatment on one day. Use K18 Leave-In as your post-wash leave-in on other wash days. They're working at different times and in different formats, which means they complement each other without stacking.
- Or specialise. If your primary concern is structural repair after bleach or colour damage, K18 Leave-In used regularly is often the stronger choice for that specific goal. If your concern is ongoing maintenance and you want a rinse-out weekly treatment, Olaplex Nº.3 fits more naturally into a traditional wash routine.
How to decide which one to start with
If your hair snaps, stretches excessively when wet, or feels like it's gotten weaker after colour services — start with K18 Leave-In. The four-minute leave-in format gives you maximum repair time and the polypeptide technology targets the specific bond damage that lightening and colouring create.
If your hair feels strong but you want ongoing weekly maintenance to prevent future damage — Olaplex Nº.3 once a week is a low-effort, well-proven choice that fits into any wash routine.
If your hair feels coated, heavy, or like your treatments have stopped working — try the K18 Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo or Olaplex Nº.4C Clarifying Shampoo first. Product buildup prevents bond builders from penetrating, and a detox wash often restores the effectiveness of treatments you already own.
If you're actively maintaining colour or blonde hair and want bond care in your daily routine without a separate treatment step — Olaplex Nº.6 Bond Smoother as a daily leave-in or K18 Damage Shield as your wash system are both designed for this.
