Most at-home colour maintenance products do one of two things: they tone blonde, or they protect colour from fading. The Cromearth system does something more precise — it refreshes the actual tone of every colour family with professional-grade mineral pigment, in a conditioning mask base that repairs and restores at the same time.

Rica Cromearth is the colour refresh system we use at the Moda backbar. The masks are built on natural earth mineral pigments — sourced from volcanic and mineral deposits, suspended in a restructuring treatment base — and the range covers every hair colour from platinum blonde through to deep brunette, copper, red, auburn, and even a rose pink. Not a general "colour-protecting" formula. Specific, targeted pigment that addresses the exact tonal shift each colour undergoes as it fades.

Here's how to find the right one for your hair.

Why colour fades the way it does — and why it matters for choosing a mask

Different pigment molecules fade differently. Small pigment molecules — copper, red — rinse out the fastest. That's why copper and red hair can look noticeably different a week after an appointment. Larger molecules — brunette, cool blonde — fade more slowly but shift warm as the lighter-rinsing warm pigments leave first. And mineral deposits from hard water compound the problem for everyone by coating the hair shaft and diffusing light, making colour look dull regardless of what the underlying tone is doing.

For blonde and grey hair — Earth Moon

The most common problem in blonde and grey hair is yellow. Platinum cools and brightens in the salon chair. Over the following weeks, the warm reflects that rinsed out quickest start to reassert themselves, and the blonde shifts toward yellow or dingy gold.

RICA Cromearth Earth Moon Mask — $41.50 CAD is the weekly toning treatment version. More concentrated, longer processing — five minutes for a gentle shift, up to fifteen for a pronounced cool result. Apply to towel-dried hair, not soaking wet: excess water dilutes the pigment and creates uneven deposit. This is the mask for when the blonde has noticeably warmed between appointments and you want to reset it in one session.

Use the shampoo on regular wash days and the mask once or twice a week for the most consistent result.

For blonde that's gone flat, not brassy — Yellow Ocher

Not every blonde problem is brassiness. Some blonde hair fades toward an ashy, flat grey-blonde that's lost its warmth and luminosity — particularly in winter, or on very light natural blondes that go dull rather than warm.

For orange brassiness — Blue Marine

Orange is the most common unwanted reflect in the salon — and the hardest to address at home. Purple shampoo doesn't touch it. Brunette toning masks aren't calibrated for it. Most clients dealing with orange brassiness on naturally dark blonde, grown-out highlighted hair, or hair that's been lightened but not fully lifted are left with nothing that actually works.

Calibrated for light brown to light blonde, which is exactly the level range where orange shows up most visibly. Start at five minutes on the first use. On very light or porous hair, blue deposits quickly and can shift greenish if left too long — keep the processing time conservative until you know how your hair responds.

For brunette going warm — Volcanic Ash

RICA Cromearth Volcanic Ash Mask — $41.50 CAD is for brown hair that's developing unwanted red or warm reflects as the colour fades. Not brassiness in blonde. This is for brunette that's shifting toward a warm red-orange tone that makes the colour look like an old dye job going off rather than intentional. The cool grey mineral pigment counteracts those warm reflects and restores the cool depth of the original brunette colour. Processing time matters more here than with warm-toned masks — don't exceed fifteen minutes, and don't use it on hair that's already cool-toned.

For copper and strawberry blonde — Red Ocher

RICA Cromearth Red Ocher Mask — $41.50 CAD revives faded copper blonde with concentrated copper-toned mineral pigment. This is for the lighter, brighter copper range — copper blonde, strawberry blonde, bright copper highlights. Apply from ends to mid-lengths first, then roots last: the ends are the oldest and most faded and need the most processing time. Roots are naturally warmer and usually need the least correction.

For red and auburn — Red Lava

RICA Cromearth Red Lava Mask — $41.50 CAD is for the deeper end of the red spectrum: rich reds, deep auburn, burgundy-red. The most concentrated mask in the Cromearth range, for hair where saturation and depth is the goal. Apply in sections, work through evenly, and use the coolest water possible to rinse — cool water seals the cuticle and locks in the red deposit that warm water would pull back out.

For warm brunette and honey balayage — Burnt Umber

RICA Cromearth Burnt Umber Mask — $41.50 CAD revives brunette from light through dark brown with warm depth and mirror shine. The effect on lighter brunette is a visible shift toward richer, warmer colour. On darker brunette, it's more about the quality of the shine and depth than a visible colour change — still meaningful, particularly in natural light. Used weekly, it's the maintenance tool that keeps brunette looking deliberate between colour services.

For honey blonde through medium brunette — Terra Cotta

The mask for the space between blonde and brunette — honey balayage, caramel highlights, warm mèches through brunette hair. Deposits a warm terracotta pigment that reads as depth on darker bases and warmth on lighter ones, without crossing into brassiness. The most versatile mask in the range for clients in the honey-to-brunette zone. Currently out of stock but worth checking back for.

The Cromearth prep step — Natural Shampoo

RICA Cromearth Natural Shampoo — $29.90 CAD is the unsung hero of the system. A gentle, tone-neutral shampoo with no competing pigment, used to prep the hair before any Cromearth mask. Every mask in the range works better when applied after a clean, neutral cleanse. If you're using a pigmented shampoo on regular wash days, switch to the Natural Shampoo on mask days so the pigments don't compete.

How to use Cromearth masks correctly

Three things that determine whether the mask works the way it should:

Towel-dry before applying. Apply to damp, not soaking wet hair. Excess water dilutes the pigment and gives uneven deposit. The hair should feel damp but not dripping.

Apply from ends to mid-lengths first, roots last. The ends are the oldest, most porous, most faded section. They need the most processing time. Roots are naturally warmer (closer to the scalp) and usually need correction last and least.

Control processing time. Five minutes is gentle. Ten to fifteen is pronounced. The exact result depends on your hair's porosity and current level. Start at five minutes on first use and adjust from there. More time is not always better — particularly with cool-toned masks on light hair.
