  • The Evening Hair Routine: 5 Things to Do Before Bed for Better Hair

    Jun 9, 2026

We put a lot of thought into what we do to our hair in the morning. We protect it from heat. We style it carefully. We finish it well. And then we tie it up in whatever elastic is on our wrist and fall asleep on a cotton pillowcase without a second thought.

Here's the thing: overnight is actually one of the best opportunities your hair has to recover. No heat. No environmental exposure. No manipulation. Just several hours where the right products can work undisturbed. The problem is most of us aren't using them.

These are the five things our stylists actually do before bed β€” and why each one matters more than it sounds.

    1. Detangle properly before you sleep

This one sounds basic but most people skip it. Going to sleep with tangled hair means every time you move during the night, those knots tighten, catch on your pillowcase, and create friction along the hair shaft. For fine hair and colour-treated hair especially, that overnight friction adds up to real breakage over time.

Take two minutes before bed to brush through properly. Start from the ends and work up toward the root in sections β€” never drag a brush from root to tip through dry knots. A wide-tooth comb or a paddle brush with flexible bristles does less damage than a stiff brush on dry hair. The goal is to go to sleep with hair that can move freely without catching.

    2. Apply a scalp treatment if your scalp needs it

Your scalp goes through the same overnight repair cycle as your skin. That makes bedtime the ideal window for a leave-on scalp treatment β€” especially if your scalp runs dry, tight, itchy, or sensitive.

Our favourite for this is the Davines ELEVATING Scalp Recovery Treatment. It's a lightweight leave-on spray that you apply directly to the scalp in sections β€” along your part line, wherever you feel tightness or dryness. It doesn't leave roots feeling heavy or greasy, which makes it genuinely wearable overnight. For clients dealing with seasonal scalp dryness, post-colour sensitivity, or general scalp discomfort, this is the product we reach for first.

Apply it after your evening brush-out, before you put your hair up for the night. Let it absorb. That's it.

    3. Use an overnight treatment on your mid-lengths and ends

The mid-lengths and ends are the oldest, most processed part of your hair. They don't benefit from scalp oils the way roots do, which means they rely entirely on what you put on them. Overnight β€” with no heat, no styling, no environmental stressors β€” is when a treatment can actually sink in and do something.

KEVIN.MURPHY NIGHT.SHIFT Overnight Serum is built specifically for this. It's a rinse-free serum you apply to damp or dry mid-lengths and ends before bed, and it absorbs overnight to deliver hydration, softness, and strength while you sleep. It's lightweight enough not to transfer heavily onto your pillow, and the results are genuinely noticeable by morning β€” especially for dry, blonde, or colour-treated hair that drinks product quickly.

This is the step most clients are missing. A conditioner rinses off. A mask you do once a week. An overnight serum works every single night, quietly, while you sleep.

    4. Put your hair up β€” the right way

Sleeping with your hair completely loose means hours of it rubbing against your pillowcase, catching under your shoulders and arms, and creating friction at the points that are already most vulnerable. But sleeping with a tight elastic at the crown creates a different kind of damage β€” tension breakage right at the hairline and around the elastic.

The move is somewhere in between. A loose, low braid or a soft bun held with a scrunchie β€” not an elastic band β€” keeps your hair contained without putting stress on any one section. If you've had a blowout you want to preserve, a loose, low pineapple or a single large clip at the nape of the neck works well. The goal is containment without tension.

Silk or satin scrunchies are genuinely better than regular elastics for this β€” they don't crease the hair the same way and they hold without the rubber-band grip that snaps fine or colour-treated strands.

    5. Sleep on a smoother pillowcase

Cotton pillowcases are absorbent and rough-textured at a microscopic level. That texture creates friction against your hair all night β€” especially for blonde, fine, or curly hair where the cuticle is already more vulnerable. It also absorbs any products you've applied, pulling them off your hair and into the fabric before they've had a chance to work.

Switching to a silk or satin pillowcase isn't a luxury gimmick. It's a friction reduction tool. Hair glides over a smooth surface instead of catching on it, which means less breakage, less frizz in the morning, and longer-lasting blowouts. If you've ever woken up with a crease across the side of your hair from the pillow seam, you understand the problem immediately.

You don't need an expensive silk pillowcase β€” a satin one does the same job for a fraction of the cost. Just wash it regularly like any other bedding.

The honest truth about overnight hair care

None of this takes more than five minutes. The detangle, the scalp treatment, the overnight serum, the soft bun, the better pillowcase β€” it's a routine you can do half-asleep. But the cumulative effect over weeks and months is real: less breakage, softer ends, a calmer scalp, and hair that holds its condition between appointments instead of declining between visits.

If you're not sure which products suit your specific hair type and scalp, ask your Moda stylist at your next appointment. We can tell you exactly what we use on you in the chair and build an at-home routine around it.
