Red is the hardest colour to keep - the pigment sits closer to the surface of the fibre and washes out faster than any other tone, which is why a salon red looks extraordinary for two weeks and tired by week four. This closes that gap. Applied every second or third wash it holds a red at full saturation almost indefinitely, which is a very different proposition from re-colouring every month.

- What makes this the truest red in the range is what is absent. The dye package is Basic Red 51, Basic Red 76 and Basic Yellow 57 - two reds and a yellow, with no blue at all. Every other red-adjacent shade in the line carries Basic Blue 99 to deepen or mute it. Remove the blue and nothing holds the red back, which is why it reads bright and why Maria Nila warns it may be too intense or stain on lighter hair without dilution.

Moda stylist tipRinse in the coolest water you can tolerate, and rinse longer than feels necessary. Hot water swells the cuticle and lifts it away from the fibre, so every warm rinse after a red application actively pulls pigment back out - it is the biggest reason reds fade fast in practice. The other half is rinsing fully: unrinsed surface pigment is what transfers to pillowcases and makes people think the colour is bleeding.

Ask ModaRed always fades fastest on me. Will this really last the full four to ten washes?
No, realistically red sits at the lower end of that range. Red pigment molecules are comparatively large and sit closer to the fibre surface, so they release faster than browns or blondes. Expect four to six washes, and plan on topping up every second or third wash rather than monthly.
Will bright red show on my natural level 5 brown without lightening first?
Yes, but as a red sheen rather than vivid red. Level 5 sits inside the stated range, so you will see warmth and a red cast in daylight. There is no lift in the formula, so a genuinely bright red on natural brown still needs a lightening service first.
Will it stain my bathroom tiles, towels and pillowcases?
Yes, more than any other shade in the range. Wear the gloves supplied, rinse the shower down immediately, and use dark towels for the first two washes. Rinsing until the water runs completely clear is the single best way to stop transfer onto bedding.
Can I use this over a faded salon red, or will the two clash?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for. Semi-permanent pigment layers over existing colour rather than reacting with it, so it rebuilds saturation on hair that has already been reddened. Faded red is also porous, which means it takes this deposit readily and evenly.
Can I tone the brightness down without buying a different shade?
Yes. Maria Nila supports mixing Colour Refresh shades together and diluting with an unpigmented masque. Blending in a little Cacao or Autumn Red introduces the blue and brown pigments this shade lacks, which mutes the red toward auburn without losing saturation.
