The question to ask first

Does it need moisture β€”
or repair?

Softness and repair
are different jobs.

Mostly dry

The hair mainly feels thirsty.

Rough, tangled, less soft, less manageable, dry through the lengths and ends β€” but it still stretches and springs back. That's a moisture question.

The hair may feel:

  • rough feeling
  • tangled
  • less soft
  • less manageable
  • dry through the ends

Likely starting points: Conditioner Β· Hair Mask Β· Leave-In Β· Oil / Serum

Mostly damaged

The hair has been through something.

Breakage, fragility, chemical stress, heavy lightening or heat stress β€” structure problems that softness alone won't answer. That's the Repair + Damage Care page.

  • heat stress
  • heavy lightening

Both

Very common after lightening.

Moisture plus a targeted treatment, ongoing conditioning and protection β€” the products here that carry a maker-stated repair claim as well as a moisture one.

The hair may feel:

  • moisture + treatment
  • conditioning care
  • targeted repair
  • ongoing support
  • protection

Likely starting points: Repair conditioner / mask + leave-in + protection

Dry doesn't automatically mean damaged, and damaged doesn't automatically mean dry. If most of what you're noticing is on the damaged side, start on the Repair page β€” this one won't try to be it.

Beautifying Elixirs Moisture Intense

β€œMy hair wants richer moisture.”

Same moisture aisle.
Different weight.

Can I mix them?

Yes. The shampoo that works for your scalp and the mask that works for your ends do not have to come from the same system. Choose each step around what your hair actually needs.

When the ends need more than the roots

Treat the driest
part of the hair.

Ends are the oldest part of the hair and the first to feel it. Dry ends don't automatically need a rich shampoo at the scalp or a heavy oil β€” they need the moisture put where the dryness is, in the step that suits how the hair behaves.

For fine hair

Moisture without
the collapse.

Fine hair can be very dry, colour-treated, curly or damaged β€” fine doesn't mean a low moisture need, it means a low tolerance for formula weight. The answer is the lightweight version of each step, applied where the hair needs it.

When the hair wants more

More softness.
More slip.
Still movement.

Coarse strands and dense hair can take richer conditioning β€” when the hair asks for it. Thick isn't damaged, coarse isn't damaged, and curly isn't automatically rich. Judge by how the hair responds, not by how it looks.

When texture needs moisture

Moisture without
losing the shape.

Curls tend to run dry because the pattern keeps natural oils from travelling down the length. Moisture helps softness. Hold helps curls last. A moisturising product isn't a substitute for definition, hold or styling β€” those live on the Curl + Texture page.

When colour changes the feel

Keep the colour.
Bring back the softness.

Colour services change how the hair feels, and plenty of colour-safe products are hydrating β€” but not every colour-care product is a moisture product, and not every moisture product is colour care. Only products whose makers say both sit here.

Dry hair questions?

A few things worth knowing.

How do I know if my hair is dry or damaged?

Dry hair mostly feels rough, tangled or less soft but still stretches and springs back, and it softens when conditioned. Damaged hair shows structure problems β€” snapping, over-stretching when wet, fragility after lightening, colour, heat or chemical services. Plenty of hair is both, and a stylist can tell you which is doing what.

Can hair be dry without being damaged?

Yes β€” very often. Fine hair, curly hair, hair in dry winter air or after sun and chlorine can be thirsty with nothing structurally wrong. That hair wants moisture and conditioning, not a repair treatment.

Can hair be both dry and damaged?

Yes, especially after lightening. That's the Dry + damaged route: products whose makers claim moisture and repair, plus a targeted treatment from the Repair page, ongoing conditioning and protection before heat.

What's the difference between moisture and repair?

Moisture is how the hair feels β€” softness, slip, manageability β€” and it comes from conditioners, masks and leave-ins. Repair products are positioned around the hair's structure. Softness and repair are different jobs, and more moisture isn't more repair.

What's the difference between Lightweight, Balanced and Rich moisture?

It's about how much formula weight the hair can carry, not how dry it is. Lightweight suits fine strands and hair that's easily weighed down; Balanced suits most medium strands and everyday routines; Rich suits coarse, dense or very dry lengths that are comfortable with more. Only products whose makers state a weight carry one here.

What should fine dry hair use?

The lightweight version of each step β€” sheer or lightweight shampoo and conditioner, a lighter mask, a leave-in mist or milk and, if wanted, a lightweight oil kept off the root. Fine hair still needs moisture; it just can't carry heaviness.

What should thick or coarse dry hair use?

Richer conditioning where the hair asks for it β€” rich conditioners and masks, leave-in moisture that stays through styling, an oil for the ends, and smoothing care if frizz is part of the picture. Thick isn't damaged, and rich still has to move.

What should I use for dry ends?

Put the moisture where the dryness is: conditioner, a mask or a leave-in on the mid-lengths and ends, and an oil or serum for the last few centimetres if the formula suits. Dry ends don't automatically need a rich shampoo at the scalp or a heavy oil.

What's the difference between a mask, leave-in and hair oil?

A mask is deeper rinse-out conditioning used in place of conditioner as directed. A leave-in is conditioning that stays after the shower β€” detangling, manageability, ongoing softness. An oil or serum is mostly a finishing or softening step β€” polish, smoothing, end care, shine β€” depending on the formula.

Does hair oil hydrate hair?

Not on its own. Oils mostly seal, soften and add shine over moisture that's already in the hair; moisture comes from water, conditioners, masks and leave-ins. Some products here are oil-and-treatment hybrids that their makers describe as hydrating β€” the card says which β€” but an oil doesn't replace conditioning or a hydrating leave-in.

Do I need a mask if I use conditioner?

Not necessarily. Conditioner is the everyday moisture anchor; a mask is for the washes when the hair needs more than that. If your conditioner is doing the job, you may not need one.

How often should I use a hair mask?

It depends on the product and the hair. Manufacturer directions vary β€” some are weekly, some as needed, some in place of conditioner β€” so follow the directions on the product you're using rather than a universal schedule.

Can I use a leave-in and hair oil together?

Yes, if the hair wants both β€” the leave-in for conditioning and detangling, a small amount of oil on the ends for polish. Whether you need both is the question: most fine hair doesn't, most coarse dry hair can.

What should dry curly hair use?

A curl conditioner with real slip at the detangling step, a moisture mask when needed and a leave-in that stays through the diffuser. Moisture helps softness; hold helps curls last β€” definition, hold and styling live on the Curl + Texture page.

What should colour-treated dry hair use?

Hydrating care whose makers also name colour-treated hair β€” colour-safe conditioners, masks and leave-ins β€” plus colour-safe heat protection before styling. Not every colour-care product is hydrating, and not every hydrating product is colour care; the cards only claim what the makers do.

What's the difference between MOMO, HYDRATE-ME and Moisture Intense?

Mostly weight and routine depth. Davines MOMO is straightforward everyday moisture, balanced in weight, with a leave-in serum rather than a mask. Kevin Murphy HYDRATE-ME is a coordinated wash-rinse-masque routine on the richer side. Eufora Moisture Intense is the richest of the three, for medium to coarse or very dry hair. None is universally better β€” the comparison above walks through it.

Can I mix moisture products from different brands?

Yes. The shampoo that suits your scalp and the mask that suits your ends don't have to come from the same system. Choose each step around what your hair actually needs.

Can too much conditioning weigh my hair down?

Yes β€” especially fine or low-density hair. Too rich a formula, too much of it, or too many moisture steps stacked together leaves hair flat, limp or coated. Give it enough, not everything: match the weight to the strand, and add steps only when the hair asks.

Can Moda help me build a moisture routine?

Yes. Use Ask Moda below and tell us what feels dry, how thick your strands are, how easily your hair gets weighed down and which step you're shopping for, and a stylist will help find the right amount of moisture for your actual hair.
