Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

The scalp is skin, and a regular shampoo mostly washes the hair while the skin underneath stays coated in sebum, dry shampoo, and dead cells. Clean Sweep is a real routine — exfoliate, cleanse, treat — not one "scalp shampoo" asked to do everything. It is the set we reach for when the scalp is the actual problem, even if the client came in talking about their hair.

Read full stylist notes

The client who uses dry shampoo four days a week, complains of flakes on her dark blazer, and has tried two anti-dandruff shampoos that made her scalp tighter and itchier. It was never dandruff — it was buildup. One Head Start exfoliation and the flakes are gone; Common Ground and Ground Control keep them gone. EVO is the family-owned Australian brand we trust for no-fluff results — vegan, cruelty-free, and built to do one job well. The EVO scalp range is a genuine exfoliate-cleanse-treat routine rather than a single scalp shampoo. Part of the Holiday 2026 gift collection.

Moda

What’s inside — and why it’s there

The ingredients worth knowing.

  • Scalp buildup is a mix of sebum, keratinised cells, and product residue that a hair-focused shampoo does not fully lift. Head Start's physical exfoliants remove it mechanically, which is why massage time matters more than product quantity. Common Ground's mild surfactant system clears what remains without disrupting the scalp's lipid barrier — over-stripping triggers rebound oil production, the reason harsh clarifiers make oily scalps worse. Ground Control's leave-on actives support the barrier between washes, extending the interval before buildup returns.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. Head Start (weekly): On dry or damp scalp, in sections, massage 2 minutes with the scrubber, then wet hair.
  2. Common Ground: On wet scalp, work in with scrubber or fingertips, rinse thoroughly. Every wash.
  3. Ground Control: On towel-dried or dry scalp, in sections, massage in. Do not rinse.

Moda stylist tipHead Start goes on dry or barely damp hair before the shower, with a full two minutes of small-circle massage using the scrubber. Exfoliant works by friction — a quick rub on soaking hair dilutes it and lets it slide off. Then wet, cleanse with Common Ground, and rinse thoroughly; exfoliator left behind is buildup of its own.

Questions? We get them.

Good to know.

The questions we hear most about this product. If yours isn’t here, a real stylist will answer.

Ask Moda
I have flakes — is this an anti-dandruff routine?

No, not in the medicated sense. Most flakes we see in the salon are buildup or dryness, not dandruff, and this routine clears those. If flakes come with redness, greasy yellow scale, or persist after two weeks of Clean Sweep, see a pharmacist — that is a condition, not buildup.

How often should I use the exfoliator?

Yes, once a week is the right rhythm for most scalps — twice at the start if buildup is heavy. Common Ground is for every wash and Ground Control for after each wash. Exfoliating more than twice a week can irritate the scalp and trigger more oil, not less.

Will a scalp shampoo dry out my lengths?

No, if you apply it to the scalp and let the rinse carry it through the lengths rather than scrubbing it down to the ends. Common Ground is sulphate-free and balancing, not a harsh clarifier. Use your regular conditioner on mid-lengths and ends as normal — the set does not include one on purpose.

Do I really need the scrubber, or is it a gimmick?

Yes, it earns its place. Exfoliator and scalp shampoo work by friction and contact, and fingertips tire quickly and reach unevenly — or people use nails, which scratch. The silicone scrubber gives consistent pressure across the whole scalp for two minutes without effort. It also keeps colour off your nails on toning days.

My hair is thinning at the crown. Will this help it grow back?

No, this routine does not regrow hair, and we would not claim it does. What it does is remove the buildup that can smother follicles and keep the scalp in the healthy state that growth needs. For thinning specifically, add EVO Home Base Scalp Serum, and talk to a doctor if it is progressing.
