Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

This is the PLUMPING step we walk clients through in the chair because it is the one they skip — and the one that makes the biggest visible difference at the crown. Root-only, on wet hair, blown out immediately. Once they get it right, they never leave it out again. The density-building actives from the Wash and Rinse carry all the way through to the blow-dry with this product.

Read full stylist notes

The client whose blowout looks great in the chair and is flat by the time she gets to the car. She is already using Plumping Wash and Rinse but skipping the leave-in because she thinks it will weigh her hair down. We show her root-only application on soaking wet hair, blow it out in front of her, and she can see the difference at the crown before she leaves. That appointment is usually when she buys the full routine. Kevin Murphy built the PLUMPING regimen on the idea that density has to be worked through every step — cleanse, condition, and style. Body Mass is where the styling philosophy meets the skincare one: the same density-building actives from the Wash carry through to the blow-dry. Moda holds White Haven status with Kevin Murphy and trains in the full PLUMPING application technique precisely because how you use this product matters as much as the product itself.

What’s inside — and why it’s there

The ingredients worth knowing.

  • Oleanolic Acid + Tripeptide ComplexExtends anagen phase density-building from the Wash step into the styling phase for cumulative root fullness.
  • Rice Amino AcidsProvide grip at the root during blow-drying and physically expand strand diameter so volume holds structurally, not just visually.
  • Ginger Root ExtractMaintains follicle microcirculation through the heat styling step.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. After rinsing Plumping Rinse, towel-dry lightly — hair should still be wet, not damp.
  2. Apply to root area only — crown, hairline, any flat zones.
  3. Do not apply to mid-lengths or ends.
  4. Blow-dry immediately with a round brush for maximum lift.
  5. Use daily as the third step in the PLUMPING routine.

Moda stylist tipApply with intention at the root, then blow-dry for lift. This is where placement makes the product worth it.

Good to know.

The questions we hear most about this product. If yours isn’t here, a real stylist will answer.

Ask Moda
I already use Plumping Wash and Rinse. Do I actually need Body Mass on top of that?

Yes, if you blow-dry. Body Mass is the step that carries the density-building actives from the shower into the blow-dry — it gives the root area grip and lift during heat styling so the volume you create actually holds. Without it, you are finishing two-thirds of the routine.

I am worried it will weigh my hair down. It says leave-in and I have fine hair.

No — if applied correctly. Root area only, on soaking wet hair, blown out immediately with heat. The formula is heat-activated during the wet-to-dry transition and vanishes into the hair. It is applying it to damp hair or the lengths that creates heaviness, not the product itself.

Can I use Body Mass if I air-dry instead of blow-drying?

No, not ideally. Body Mass is heat-activated — it needs the wet-to-dry blow-dry transition to perform properly. For air-dry volume and lift, Anti Gravity is a better fit. It delivers a similar lightweight fullness without requiring heat.

What is the difference between Body Mass and Thick Again — they both seem to do the same thing?

Body Mass is lighter and focused on root lift before blow-drying — it is a daily step in the PLUMPING routine for fine hair that wants more body. Thick Again is richer and formulated for hair with more significant thinning or density loss. If you are not sure which applies to you, start with Body Mass and move to Thick Again if you want more intensive support.

How much product should I use for a full head of fine hair?

Start with a 10 to 20 cent piece in your palm — less than you think. Body Mass goes on wet hair at the root and a little spreads further than expected. Apply with fingers directly to the root area, focusing on the crown and any flat zones, and blow-dry immediately. Build up only if the result is not quite enough.
