The question to ask first

Does the hair need care —
or does the tone need correcting?

Purple is a tool.
Not the whole routine.

The hair needs care

Something feels different.

Dryness, roughness, breakage, lost softness, heat exposure, chemical stress, dullness — these are hair-condition problems. Pigment doesn't fix any of them.

You might be noticing:

  • dryness
  • breakage
  • roughness
  • loss of softness
  • heat exposure
  • chemical stress

Route toward: moisture, repair, strength, a mask, a treatment or heat protection — whichever the hair is actually asking for.

The tone needs correcting

Something looks different.

Unwanted warmth, yellow-looking tones, brassiness, tone shifting between salon visits — these are tone problems. This is where pigment earns its place.

You might be noticing:

  • unwanted warmth
  • yellow tones
  • brassiness
  • tone shifting between visits

Route toward: a toning shampoo, toning conditioner or toning mask — one pigmented step, chosen for the tone you're seeing.

Both?Very common after lightening. Care for the hair every wash; tone only on the days the tone actually needs it.

“I want toning + conditioning together.”

Can I mix them?

Yes. Your entire routine does not have to come from one system. Choose each step based on what your hair and tone actually need — and don't stack pigment in every step just because you can.

Build my blonde routine

Blonde basics

Blonde is a hair colour.
Brassy is a concern.

All brassy hair is blonde, but not all blonde hair is brassy. Blonde may need hydration, repair, strength, shine or protection without needing pigment. Toning care belongs in the routine when unwanted warmth is actually what you're seeing.

Dry or damaged?

They're not
the same thing.

Dry-feeling blonde

It drinks in conditioner and still feels thirsty.

Dryness is a moisture problem: hair that feels rough or straw-like but still stretches and bounces back.

Signs to look for:

  • rough or straw-like feel
  • tangles more than it used to
  • softens when conditioned, then dries out again

May need: moisture, conditioning, softness, manageability.

Shop moisture care

Stressed or fragile blonde

It snaps, stretches or won't hold together.

Damage is a structure problem: hair that breaks, over-stretches or has lost its elasticity after lightening or heat.

Signs to look for:

  • snapping or breaking
  • over-stretching when wet
  • flyaway short pieces
  • heat or chemical stress

May need: repair, strength, breakage support, bond care.

Shop repair care

A blonde can need both — and plenty of blonde hair is neither. Nothing here assumes lightened hair is damaged by default.

Both?Treat the structure first, then add moisture — a repair treatment before your conditioner or mask on the days it needs both.

Lightened and toned hair changes between appointments. The right home routine can support tone, condition and manageability — but home toning products are not a replacement for professional colour correction.

Blonde questions?

A few things worth knowing.

Does blonde hair need purple shampoo?

Not automatically. Purple shampoo is for one job — counteracting unwanted yellow warmth. If your blonde looks the tone you want and simply feels dry, dull or fragile, it needs care, not pigment. Use it when the tone shifts, not because the hair is blonde.

How often should I use purple shampoo?

As often as your tone needs it and the product's directions allow — most makers suggest alternating with an everyday shampoo rather than using it every wash. There's no universal frequency; porous, lightened hair takes pigment faster, so start with the shorter leave-on time on the label.

What's the difference between purple shampoo and normal shampoo?

Purple shampoo cleanses and deposits a small amount of violet pigment to neutralise yellow tones; a normal (or everyday blonde) shampoo just cleanses and cares. Toning shampoos can feel drier, which is why the everyday routine still matters.

What's the difference between purple and blue toning products?

Each is formulated around a specific unwanted warmth: the violet products on our shelves are positioned for yellow-leaning tones in blonde, silver and grey hair; the blue product is positioned for orange-leaning reflects, typically in light brown to light blonde. Go by the product's own description of the tone it addresses.

Can toning products make hair look too cool or dull?

Yes — over-toning is real, especially on porous or very light hair. That's why we suggest the shorter leave-on time first, toning only on the days the tone needs it, and not stacking pigment in every step of the routine.

Should I use toning shampoo and toning conditioner together?

You can, and several systems are designed as a pair — but it isn't required. Many blondes do best with a toning shampoo and an everyday conditioner, or a toning conditioner with an everyday shampoo. Watch the tone and adjust; don't add pigment by default.

What's the difference between Heart of Glass and ALCHEMIC Silver?

Heart of Glass is Davines' blonde-care system — cleansing, conditioning, repair and shine for the blonde hair itself, with Jagua Blue extract balancing warmth as a secondary benefit. ALCHEMIC Silver is a colour-depositing shampoo and conditioner whose main job is maintaining a cooler tone. Care system versus colour-maintenance tool.

What's the difference between ALCHEMIC Silver and BLONDE.ANGEL?

Both tone. ALCHEMIC Silver is the most explicit colour-deposit of the three — a focused shampoo + conditioner for cool blonde, silver and grey. BLONDE.ANGEL is Kevin Murphy's toning-care system: lavender pigment in a wash and a conditioning treatment built to tone and condition together, without the dryness purple shampoo is known for.

Can I mix Heart of Glass, ALCHEMIC and BLONDE.ANGEL?

Yes. Your routine doesn't have to come from one system — a Heart of Glass shampoo with an ALCHEMIC Silver conditioner is a perfectly sensible pairing. Choose each step by what your hair and tone need, and avoid using every pigmented product at once.

What is a toning mask?

A weekly or as-needed rinse-out mask with more pigment than a toning shampoo and deeper conditioning — for warmth that has built up between appointments. Follow the product's processing time; longer isn't better.

What's the difference between toning and colour-depositing products?

Toning products neutralise unwanted warmth. Colour-depositing products add or refresh a specific reflect — a cooler silver, a warmer honey or beige — and some, like ALCHEMIC Silver, do both. The card on every product here says which.

Does blonde hair need more moisture?

Often, because lightening makes hair more porous and it loses moisture faster — but not always. Judge by feel: rough, thirsty hair that softens when conditioned wants moisture. Snapping, over-stretching hair wants repair.

How do I know if my blonde needs moisture or repair?

Dryness is a feel problem — rough, tangly, straw-like, but the hair still stretches and bounces back. Damage is a structure problem — it snaps, over-stretches when wet or has short flyaway pieces. Plenty of blondes need both; the Dry or damaged? module above walks through it.

What should I use for bleached or fragile hair?

Start with repair and strength — bond-focused or protein treatments positioned for lightened hair — and pair them with an everyday blonde routine and heat protection. The Repair + strength module routes to the Hair Treatments page.

What should silver or grey hair use?

Products whose makers name silver, grey or white hair: violet toning to keep yellow away, plus moisture and shine, because grey hair is often coarser and drier. The Silver + grey route above is pre-filtered to those products only.

Does purple shampoo repair damage?

No. Purple shampoo addresses tone. Some toning products carry bond or repair actives alongside the pigment, and the card says so where the maker claims it — but pigment itself doesn't repair anything.

How do I protect blonde hair from heat?

Use a heat protectant whose directions match how you style — most go on damp hair before the dryer. Lightened hair is more vulnerable to heat, so protection matters more, not less. The Heat protection route shows the products on this page with a verified claim.

Can home toning replace a salon toner?

No. Home toning products maintain and refresh tone between appointments; a professional toner corrects it. If your blonde has shifted more than a toning shampoo can manage, that's a colour consultation, not a stronger purple shampoo.

Can Moda help me choose?

Yes. Use Ask Moda below and tell us what your blonde is doing — too warm, too dry, both, or snapping after lightening — and a stylist will separate the tone problem from the hair-care problem and point you to the right step.
