Repair isn't one thing

Bond care, strengthening and conditioning are different jobs.

Bond-focused products work on the brand's own bond technology. Strengthening treatments reinforce fragile hair with protein. Conditioning treatments soften and add moisture — and many of those belong on the Hair Masks shelf, not here. None of them is automatically the other.

They're not the same shelf anymore

Mask or treatment?

Some products genuinely do both. When they do, we give them one primary shelf and mark the treatment function — so a bond mask shows here too, but a conditioning mask doesn't.

One job
at a time.

Hair mask

Intensive rinse-out conditioning.

A mask is the deeper conditioning step — used in place of conditioner, left on, rinsed. Its job is usually moisture, softness, slip and manageability.

Signs to look for:

  • hair feels dry, rough or tangly
  • you want softness and slip
  • the problem is moisture, not structure

What helps: a hair mask — the Hair Masks page sorts them by level and type.

Hair treatment

Targeted repair, bond care, strengthening.

A treatment is built around a specific job: bond care, strengthening, breakage support or another specialist function — and it can sit before shampoo, in the shower or be left in.

Signs to look for:

  • hair breaks, stretches or snaps
  • it has been lightened, coloured or chemically treated
  • the problem is strength or structure

What helps: a hair treatment — start with what your hair has been through.

When damage is the concern

Meet bond care.

Different brands use different technologies and systems. Bond-focused products are not automatically interchangeable, so start with the product's actual role and instructions rather than assuming every bond treatment does the same thing.

For fine hair

Repair without
turning it heavy.

Fine hair can absolutely need targeted repair. The goal is choosing the right treatment without automatically reaching for the richest formula on the shelf — the product's own suitability and directions decide, not a rule about fine hair.

When beautiful colour
asks more from the hair.

Lightened and coloured hair doesn't need every category at once. The point is to tell damage, breakage, dryness and strength apart — then treat the one that's actually happening.

Treatment questions?

A few things worth knowing.

What's the difference between a hair mask and a hair treatment?

A mask is intensive rinse-out conditioning — moisture, softness, slip, manageability. A treatment is built around a targeted job: bond care, strengthening, breakage support or a specialist function, and it can sit before shampoo, in the shower or stay in. A few products genuinely do both; those get one primary shelf and appear here through their treatment function.

How do I know if I need a repair treatment?

Look at what the hair is doing, not the label. Hair that snaps, stretches, tangles more than it used to, or feels rough after lightening, colour or heat is showing structural stress — that's a treatment conversation. Hair that's simply dry and dull usually wants a mask first.

What's the difference between bond care and strengthening?

Bond-focused products work on the brand's own bond technology — each system is different and they're not interchangeable. Strengthening treatments reinforce fragile hair with protein and similar actives. One isn't a stronger version of the other; they address different things, and the product's own claim decides which it is.

Do I need a bond treatment?

Not automatically. If your hair has been lightened, coloured or chemically processed and feels weaker, bond care is a sensible starting point. If the issue is dryness or frizz, it may not be. Bond care supports damaged hair; no product here claims to restore it to an untreated state.

How often should I use a hair treatment?

It depends on the product — some are weekly, some every third wash, some overnight as needed, and pre-shampoo treatments have their own timing. There's no universal frequency, so follow the directions on the product you're using and adjust with your stylist.

What is a pre-shampoo treatment?

A treatment applied before you wash — to dry or damp hair — left on for the product's stated time, then shampooed out. The Pre-shampoo route above only shows products whose directions explicitly say so.

Can I use a treatment and a hair mask?

Often, yes — typically treatment first, then conditioner or mask, on the days your hair needs both. Check the product's own directions: some in-shower treatments are used instead of conditioner, and some ask you not to layer.

Can I use a treatment instead of conditioner?

Some rinse-out treatments are designed to be used in place of conditioner; many are not and expect conditioner afterwards. The directions say which. Leave-in treatments don't replace the rinse-out step unless the manufacturer says so.

What treatment is best for breakage-prone hair?

Start with the Breakage + fragility route: strengthening and bond-focused treatments whose makers position them for fragile hair. Which one fits depends on what caused it — lightening, chemical services, heat — and on your hair type. Ask Moda if you're not sure.

What should I use after lightening or colour?

Distinguish the need first. Weak, snapping hair points to bond care or strengthening; rough, dry hair points to moisture — which is usually a mask. You rarely need every category at once, and stacking them doesn't speed anything up.

What should fine hair look for in a treatment?

Products whose suitability for fine hair is stated, applied as directed and kept off the root where the label says so. Fine hair can need just as much repair as thick hair; it simply shouldn't be treated with the richest formula by default.

Do I need a treatment if I use heat protection?

They're separate jobs. Heat protection helps guard hair during styling; a treatment addresses hair that's already stressed. If you use heat regularly and your hair shows it, use both — and keep the protection on for the next blow-dry.

Are salon treatments different from home treatments?

Yes. Some professional treatments are designed for salon use only and are applied by a stylist; the products on this page are the retail versions made for home use between appointments. Professional-only products are kept off this shelf.

Can Moda help me choose?

Yes. Use Ask Moda below and tell us what your hair has been through — colour, lightening, heat, breakage, chemical services — plus your hair type, and a stylist will narrow it down to the right treatment and where it goes in your routine.
