Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

Detangling is the quiet job that decides whether a repair routine works - every wet comb-through on rough, porous hair is mechanical breakage. This conditioner gives real slip through behentrimonium chloride and stearamidopropyl dimethylamine, while repairing algae, olive and moringa oils handle softness and shine. Colour Guard Complex protects the colour on top of it.

Maria Nila is a Swedish house founded in 1999 by the Wikstrom family and named after founder Ann's great-grandmother; every product is 100% vegan, with Leaping Bunny, PETA, Vegan Society and B Corp certification behind it. We brought Maria Nila in as a new, fresh addition to the shelf - chosen with our younger clients in mind, and because the range is playful in a way most professional lines are not. Our honest read is that this is the up-and-coming brand making the biggest impact right now.

What’s inside — and why it’s there

The ingredients worth knowing.

  • The slip comes from behentrimonium chloride and stearamidopropyl dimethylamine - cationic conditioning agents that bind preferentially to the negatively charged damaged sites left by bleach and heat, which is also why static and flyaway drop away. Cystoseira Compressa algae is the repair signature shared across the Structure Repair line; olive, moringa and sunflower seed oils supply the lipid layer Maria Nila credits with moisture retention and shine. Quaternium-95 completes Colour Guard Complex alongside sunflower oil. Note the formula contains dimethicone and dimethiconol - Maria Nila makes no silicone-free claim on this product.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. Squeeze excess water from freshly washed hair.
  2. Apply through mid-lengths and ends, then comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
  3. Leave one to two minutes and rinse thoroughly.

Moda stylist tipSqueeze the water out before the conditioner goes on. Dripping hair dilutes the product so the conditioning agents cannot deposit, and you end up using twice as much for half the slip. Apply mid-lengths down, comb through while it is still in, and detangle in the shower - never after.

Ask Moda
Does this conditioner contain silicones? I have been trying to avoid them.

Yes, it does - dimethicone and dimethiconol are both in the list, and Maria Nila makes no silicone-free claim here. On damaged hair that is a fair trade, because silicone is a large part of why the comb moves. If you are strictly silicone-free, the Coils & Curls Finishing Treatment Masque is the Maria Nila option.

Can I use this every day, or will it build up on damaged hair?

Yes, daily use is fine - Maria Nila states the Structure Repair products can be used daily. The one thing that causes build-up is applying it at the root and under-rinsing. Keep it below the ear line, rinse for a full thirty seconds past the point it feels finished, and it will not accumulate.

My ends are badly damaged. Is two minutes of conditioner really enough?

No, not on its own. Two minutes is a maintenance step, not a treatment. Use this conditioner on ordinary wash days and swap in the Structure Repair Masque for five to ten minutes once or twice a week, or the Booster Masque when you only have three minutes to spare.

It comes in 100ml, 300ml and a litre. Is the litre worth it for one person?

Yes, if your hair is past shoulder length and you wash three or more times a week. Conditioner is always the bottle that empties first on long hair, and the litre works out far better per wash. Start on the 300ml if you are trialling the line and are not yet sure the scent suits you.

My hair is full of winter static. Will this actually fix that?

Yes - Maria Nila specifically states this conditioner fights static electricity. The cationic conditioning agents neutralise the negative charge that builds on dry, damaged hair, which is what causes the cling and the halo of flyaways. Rinsing with cooler water and skipping over-brushing will make the effect last longer.
