Hair that has been treated with hydrophobic agents has a lower affinity for water at the cuticle surface, so more water sheds mechanically at the towel stage and less is retained for the dryer to remove. Since thermal damage accumulates as a product of temperature and exposure time, cutting the time is itself a protective effect, independent of the barrier film.
