Volume products are honest about where they work — at the scalp, through the lengths or on the finished style. Pick the place first and the format second. A root powder won't give you body through the ends; a mousse everywhere won't give you a lifted crown.

The step fine hair keeps skipping
Skipping conditioner doesn't give fine hair volume — it gives it tangles, static and ends that snap. The answer is the right conditioner, used the right way: lightweight or volume-built, mid-lengths to ends only, kept off the root, rinsed well.
When fine hair is also thirsty
Fine hair can be genuinely dry — colour, heat and winter air don't check strand width first. It needs the same moisture as everyone else in the lightest possible formula: sheer conditioners, lighter masks, a mist rather than a cream. The Dry Hair + Hydration page has the full lightweight route.
When fine hair has been through something
Lightening, colour and heat hit fine hair harder because there's less of each strand to lose. Damaged doesn't mean rich — it means bond care and strengthening in the lightest formulas, plus protection before the next blow-dry. When texture needs lift, not weight
Fine wavy and curly hair has the same problem in a different shape: anything heavy pulls the wave flat, anything too strong makes it stringy. Mousse and foam are the natural fit — definition and body in the same step — and the Curl + Texture page holds the lightest of the curl range.

Five formats, five different moments in the routine. Damp-hair formats (sprays, mousse) build the volume; dry-hair formats (powder, texture spray, hairspray) hold it or bring it back. Fine hair usually needs one from each side, not all five.

Fine describes the width of each strand — lots of hairs, each one narrow, soft and easily weighed down. Thinning describes a change: noticeably less hair than you used to have, or more shedding than usual. Fine hair is what this page is built for. Thinning isn't something we diagnose from a product page — Scalp Care and a consultation are the honest starting points.
Usually one of three things: a conditioner or styling product that's too heavy for the strand, roots that weren't lifted and cooled during the blow-dry, or oil at the scalp by mid-afternoon. Lighter care, a root step under the dryer and a dry texture or powder for the afternoon fix all three.

If the crown drops and the lengths are fine, a root spray or powder. If the whole head feels limp, a mousse through the lengths. Plenty of fine hair uses both: the root product at the scalp, mousse through the rest. Only a few mousses are root-designed — the cards say which.
The care products here are chosen because their makers built them light, not stripping. Where a product also carries a hydration claim it's marked. If your fine hair is genuinely dry, start on the Dry Hair + Hydration page's lightweight route and add volume styling on top.
No. On this page, thickening is the maker's word for a product that makes each strand feel or look fuller while it's in the hair — a coating, a plumping conditioner, a heat-activated cream. It washes out. Nothing here claims to change how your hair grows, and we don't make that claim for it.
Dry shampoo absorbs oil at the scalp; dry texture spray adds grip and airy fullness through the lengths. Plenty of cans claim both, but they're different jobs. If the roots are oily, dry shampoo first. If the hair is clean but flat, texture spray or powder.
On dry, styled hair. Tap or shake a small amount directly onto the roots where the crown has dropped, wait a moment, then work it in with your fingertips. Start with less than you think — it's instant, and more is easy to add.
Not always. Mousses, foams and most all-over products work air-dried, and powders and texture sprays need no heat at all. Heat-activated sprays and blow-dry creams are the exception — they're built to set under the dryer, so use them when you're blow-drying.

A stiff one will. Volumizing and flexible hairsprays are built to lock in lift without loading the hair — mist from a distance, at the roots with the head flipped if you want height, and stop before the hair feels coated.
Yes. A mousse or foam on damp hair, roots lifted with your fingers as it dries, and a powder or texture spray once it's dry. You'll get more height with a dryer, but air-dried fullness is very achievable on fine hair.
