Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

If you have ever put a red refresh on brunette hair and found it looked oddly bright and obviously dyed for the first two washes, this shade's pigment structure is the fix. Basic Brown 17 supplies depth and Basic Blue 99 mutes the reds, so it never reaches that pitch - and it fades toward warm brown rather than dropping to pink.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. Shampoo with a neutral, non-clarifying shampoo, then towel-dry until damp.
  2. Wearing gloves, comb evenly through the full length. Dilute with an unpigmented masque if lighter than level 7.
  3. Leave 3-10 minutes.
  4. Rinse with cool water until it runs clear, then follow with conditioner.

Moda stylist tipWash with a neutral shampoo before this, not a clarifying or detox one. There is a widespread habit of clarifying before any colour deposit on the logic that clean hair takes colour better, and with cationic pigment that logic runs backwards. Clarifying shampoos strip the cuticle and spike porosity unevenly, and a four-dye shade separates on a head with uneven porosity - the brown and blue land in different places than the reds.

Good to know.

The questions we hear most about this product. If yours isn’t here, a real stylist will answer.

Ask Moda
How is Autumn Red actually different from Bright Red?

Yes, they are genuinely different products. Bright Red runs three dyes with no blue, so nothing restrains it. Autumn Red adds Basic Blue 99 to mute the reds and Basic Brown 17 for depth. One is built to be vivid, the other to be rich and wearable on brunette hair.

Will it blend the grey coming through at my temples?

No. Maria Nila states Colour Refresh does not cover grey. Unpigmented hair takes cationic dye unpredictably, and greys at the temples will usually go a lighter, warmer copper-pink rather than blending into the surrounding red. Grey coverage needs a permanent colour service.

On level 3 hair, will this look red at all or just brown?

Yes, but mostly in direct light. At level 3 the base is dark enough that a muted red deposit reads as a warm red-brown rather than as red. Run the full ten minutes, and expect a glow through the hair rather than an obvious colour change.

Can I layer this with Bright Copper for a warmer autumn shade?

Yes, and mixing is better than layering. Maria Nila supports blending Colour Refresh shades together, so combine them in a bowl before applying rather than doing two separate applications. Layering gives uneven results because the first deposit changes how the second binds.

Will it fade orange the way my salon auburn does?

No, less so than most reds. Basic Blue 99 stays in the formula as the reds release, which keeps warmth in check through the fade. The result drifts toward a soft warm brown rather than the flat orange a blue-free red leaves behind.
