It is defined by an absence. Nearly every shade in the range carries Basic Blue 99, because blue is what stops warm pigment running away into orange. This one has none - just Basic Brown 17, Basic Red 76 and Basic Yellow 57. The brown is what gives copper its body, and it is the reason this fades gracefully rather than collapsing to flat orange the way most copper does.

- The only shade in the range with no Basic Blue 99 in it at all, which is what makes it a genuine copper rather than a muted auburn. Basic Brown 17 supplies the body - without it a red-and-yellow deposit reads thin and slightly neon on lightened hair. Cationic dyes binding to porous, processed hair; deposit only, no oxidant, no lift. Maria Nila specifies levels 2 to 7 and rates the deposit at four to ten washes.

Moda stylist tipDo not follow this with a purple or blue-toned shampoo, and check the bottle before you assume. Blue and violet are the direct complement of copper, and a blonde-toning shampoo two days after a copper refresh actively neutralises what you just deposited - usually leaving a dull grey-brown cast that gets blamed on the copper fading fast. If there is a purple shampoo in the shower for someone else, move it.

Ask ModaWill copper show on my natural dark brown hair without lightening?
Yes, as a warm glow in direct light rather than a copper transformation. There is no lift in this formula, so on natural dark hair you get a coppery sheen where the light hits. Visible copper on a dark base still requires a lightening service first.
My copper always fades to a flat orange. Will this do the same?
No, it fades better than most. Basic Brown 17 gives the copper depth that a plain red-and-yellow deposit lacks, so it releases toward a softer warm brown rather than a thin orange. Topping up at wash three or four keeps it metallic throughout.
Can I use it to revive a salon copper rather than create one?
Yes, that is its strongest use. Hair that has already been coloured copper is porous and takes this pigment readily, so it rebuilds saturation evenly. Used every second or third wash it holds a salon copper at appointment-day intensity for weeks.
I'm a level 7 blonde. Will this go straight to orange on me?
Yes, it can at full time. Level 7 is the top of the stated range and with no blue in the formula there is nothing restraining the warmth on a light base. Keep it to three minutes, or dilute with an unpigmented masque to soften the result.
Does copper stain the bathroom more than the brown shades?
Yes, noticeably more. Warm pigments transfer more readily than neutral browns, though less than Bright Red. Wear the gloves supplied, rinse the shower straight away, and use dark towels for the first couple of washes after applying.
