- The mechanism that matters here is film formation timed to the drying curve. Curl shape is set by hydrogen bonds re-forming in the cortex as water evaporates; a styling film applied to damp hair dries alongside that process and casts around the curl grouping, fixing the bonds in the encouraged shape rather than a random one.
- That same film then acts as a partial barrier to atmospheric water vapour. Humidity-driven frizz occurs when vapour re-enters the fibre, breaks set hydrogen bonds and lets individual strands swell out of their clump — slowing that ingress is what Maria Nila means by protecting against humidity.

No, if you use the ends-only placement. Maria Nila formulates two application methods: ends only gives loose, airy texture with the root left free, while full lengths gives controlled definition. Waves generally want the first, which encourages the pattern without casting a firm clump.
Will this really hold up in humidity, or will my frizz come straight back?
Yes, it is built for exactly that. Humidity frizz happens when water vapour re-enters the fibre and breaks the hydrogen bonds holding your curl shape. The film this cream casts as the hair dries slows that ingress, which is why Maria Nila positions it as humidity protection.
Can I use it on dry hair to revive day-two curls?
No. Maria Nila directs it to damp hair, and for good reason: the film has to dry in place around the curl to set the shape. Applied to dry hair it sits on the surface and goes pasty. Re-wet the section with water first, or use Floral Drift instead.
I already own Maria Nila Styling Cream. Is Curlicue different enough to buy too?
Yes. They share a hold rating but not a job. Styling Cream works on damp or dry hair, adds subtle shine and suits straightened styles. Curlicue is damp-only, built specifically to cast curl clumps and resist humidity. Curly clients generally need the second one.
Does it really matter whether I apply it to the ends or the full lengths?
Yes, it changes the result entirely. Maria Nila specifies ends-only for a textured look and full lengths for a controlled one. Most people apply everywhere by default, get more structure than they wanted, and assume the cream is too heavy when the placement was simply wrong.
