The client who comes in for colour and says her hair has felt dull and heavy for the past few weeks despite using good products. She is washing regularly but her styling products are sitting on top of the hair, her conditioner does not seem to be absorbing, and her colour looks flat even though it is not overdue. The culprit is build-up — usually product residue layering over weeks. We send her home with Maxi Wash, she uses it as a pre-wash twice and by the next appointment her hair is responding normally again. Maxi Wash is the only product in Kevin Murphy's DETOX regimen — a deliberate choice. Kevin Murphy's philosophy is to make one product do its job extraordinarily well rather than building unnecessary system complexity. It removes mineral deposits from tap water that can interfere with colour deposition and creates an even, clean surface for the colour to work on. Most clients have no idea this step exists — it is what colourists call a pre-colour treatment shampoo.

Ask ModaHow often should I use Maxi Wash — can I use it every wash?
No — it is designed for weekly or as-needed use only. Always follow it with your regular shampoo and conditioner rather than using it alone. If your hair does not build up quickly, once a fortnight may be sufficient. Watch how your hair responds: lighter feel and better-performing products means you have the frequency right.
Is Maxi Wash safe for colour-treated hair?
Yes — Kevin Murphy specifically states it is chelating while being safe for coloured hair. The AHAs remove mineral and product deposits from the cuticle surface without opening the cuticle and stripping colour molecules the way sulphate shampoos do. The Thyme and Rosemary organic extracts add antioxidant protection for colour during the cleanse. Use once a week after colour appointments and your colour will not fade faster because of it.
Do I use Maxi Wash instead of my regular shampoo or before it?
Before — and this matters. Kevin Murphy designed Maxi Wash specifically as a pre-wash. Use it first, rinse it out, then shampoo and condition as normal. Using it as your only shampoo skips the conditioning and treatment benefits your regular routine provides.
My shampoo and conditioner seem to have stopped working as well. Could build-up be why?
Yes — almost certainly. Product residue, silicone build-up and hard water minerals accumulate on the hair shaft and block shampoo and conditioner from penetrating properly. One Maxi Wash use typically resets this. Most clients notice an immediate difference in how their regular routine feels after the first detox.
Can I use Maxi Wash before a colour appointment?
Yes — Kevin Murphy specifically recommends it as an ideal pre-colour treatment shampoo. Mineral deposits and product residue on the hair shaft can affect how evenly colour deposits. Using Maxi Wash the morning of your appointment (or the day before) removes those deposits and creates a clean, even surface for the colour to work on. Your colourist starts with better-prepared hair.
