Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

It is the straightforward deep brown of the range, and the narrower level band - 2 to 6 rather than 2 to 7 - tells you it is genuinely deep rather than mid. It is also the shade brunettes most often use as a base and then warm with a little Caramel Brown or Bright Copper, because every shade in this line is built from the same small palette of dyes and they blend predictably.

What’s inside — and why it’s there

The ingredients worth knowing.

  • Positively charged basic dyes binding to the more negatively charged surface of processed hair, which is why Maria Nila notes these masques work best on previously coloured rather than virgin hair. On virgin dark hair the result is largely a shine effect from the argan-oil base rather than a visible colour change - that is simply what deposit-only colour does when there is no porosity to hold it. No oxidant, no lift.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. Shampoo and towel-dry until damp.
  2. Wearing gloves, apply to the faded ends first and leave 3-4 minutes.
  3. Comb the rest up through mid-lengths and roots, then leave a further 3-6 minutes.
  4. Rinse thoroughly, then follow with conditioner.

Moda stylist tipApply to the faded ends first and give them a genuine head start - three or four minutes before bringing it up through the mid-lengths and roots. Faded brunette ends are the most porous and most colour-depleted part of the head, and treating the whole length for the same time simply preserves the existing imbalance. Staggering is exactly how a colourist applies a refresh in the chair.

Ask Moda
Will Cacao cover the greys coming through my brown?

No. Maria Nila states clearly that Colour Refresh does not cover grey. Unpigmented grey hair has a different structure and takes cationic dye unpredictably, so greys will stay visible as lighter strands through the brown. Grey coverage needs a permanent colour service.

My hair is naturally dark and never coloured. Will I see any difference?

No, not much colour change. Maria Nila notes these masques work best on previously coloured hair, because virgin hair has a closed cuticle and little porosity for cationic pigment to bind to. You will get shine and conditioning from the argan oil base, but not a visible depth change.

Can I use this to refresh a faded box colour, or is it only for salon colour?

Yes, it works on either. What matters is porosity, not where the colour came from - box colour leaves hair processed and porous in the same way. Be aware that box colour often fades unevenly, so stagger your application and give the most faded sections a head start.

Will it make my balayage look muddy?

Yes, it can. Lightened pieces are the most porous hair on your head and will take this deep brown far more strongly than the surrounding colour. Clip your balayage out and either skip it entirely or give it under two minutes at the very end.

How do I avoid a patchy result on hair that has faded unevenly?

Yes, this needs a staggered application. Put it on your most faded section first, wait three or four minutes, then comb the rest through the fresher hair. Equal time on unequal porosity preserves the imbalance rather than correcting it.
