- The durability is a crosslinking effect, not a coating effect. Silicone quaternium-18 and polysilicone-29 carry cationic charge, so they are electrostatically drawn to the anionic cuticle surface — which is more negatively charged, and therefore more attractive to them, the more damaged the hair is. Applied heat then drives condensation between adjacent silicone chains, converting a deposited layer into a continuous crosslinked film with far higher wash and abrasion resistance than a simple silicone would have. That film is simultaneously the thermal barrier rated to 230°C and the optical smoothing layer behind the reported 74 per cent frizz reduction. Ask ModaHow can the result last four days when I am washing and restyling in between?
Yes, that is the design. Heat converts the deposited silicone quaternium layer into a crosslinked film with far higher wash and abrasion resistance than an ordinary silicone, so it persists through brushing and days of wear. Reapply at your next wash rather than every morning.
Is this a keratin smoothing treatment in a bottle? Will it change my curl pattern permanently?
No. It works on the outside of the hair, not inside the bond structure, so nothing about your natural texture changes. Wash it out and your curl returns exactly as it was. A chemical smoothing service alters disulphide or keratin bonds; this deposits a removable film.
I air-dry most of the time. Will I still get anything out of it?
No, not the main benefit. The silicone system needs heat to crosslink, so air-drying leaves you with an ordinary leave-in conditioner and none of the four-day durability or heat protection you paid for. If you rarely use a dryer, a leave-in cream or oil is a better fit.
Will a silicone this durable build up on my hair or dull my colour over time?
No, if you are washing normally. The film is wash-resistant rather than permanent and clears over subsequent washes. Maria Nila also include pomegranate and sunflower extracts as a colour-preserving element. A clarifying wash every few weeks is sensible insurance if you use it every wash day.
I already use a heat spray. Do I need both, or does this replace it?
Yes, it replaces it. Gloss Coat carries its own heat protection to 230°C, which covers any straightener or wand, so layering a separate heat spray over it adds weight without adding protection. The difference is that this also delivers multi-day gloss and frizz control on top.
