Salt textures hair by depositing between strands and by pulling a little water out of the fibre, which roughens the cuticle so strands grip rather than slide. Both effects work, and both are drying if nothing counters them. Maria Nila built the counterweight in: glycerin and Laminaria digitata kelp extract hold water against the salt's osmotic pull, and a PEG-modified silicone keeps the slip. No, this one is formulated against that. Salt draws water out of the fibre, so Maria Nila loaded the formula with glycerin and Laminaria digitata kelp extract, both of which bind water at the surface, plus a water-dispersible silicone for slip. That is why the brand calls it nourishing.
Salty Mist or Ocean Spray — how do I choose between the two salt sprays?
Yes, they are genuinely different. Salty Mist is hold 2 out of 5, nourishing, and gives soft moving waves. Ocean Spray is hold 3 out of 5 with a matte, non-sticky finish and enough grip to hold a pinned updo. Softer look, take this one.
My hair is poker straight. Will this create waves that were never there?
No. A salt spray amplifies a bend that already exists; it cannot invent a wave pattern. On straight hair it delivers grip, volume and lived-in texture, and it holds a wave far better if you scrunch, plait or twist the damp hair and let it dry that way.
Can I spritz this on dry hair to revive yesterday's waves?
No. Maria Nila directs it onto towel-dried hair, because the texture forms as the fibre dries around the salt. On dry hair you get surface grit and no wave. For a day-two refresh without re-wetting, Maria Nila Texture Spray is the dry-application option.
Will it leave my hair sticky or crunchy by the end of the day?
No. The hold comes from PVP at a light 2 out of 5 loading, not a heavy resin, and the dimethicone PEG-8 meadowfoamate adds slip on top of it. The hair keeps moving and combs through rather than setting into a crunchy cast.
