Ask ModaHow does violet toning shampoo work?
Yes — it works on the colour wheel. Purple sits opposite yellow, so violet pigments cancel out the yellow and golden tones that develop in blonde, white, and grey hair over time (from toner fading, hard water, UV, and product build-up). The Sheer Silver Shampoo deposits a small amount of violet pigment with each wash, keeping the hair cool, bright, and clean-toned rather than warm or brassy. Blackberry extract adds shine on top.
How often should I use it, and can I over-tone?
Use it 1–2 times a week rather than every wash. Violet toning is cumulative, and yes, overuse can leave a faint lilac or violet cast on very light blonde, white, or grey hair. Start with a short contact time (a minute or two) and increase gradually until you find the level that suits your hair. On your other wash days, use a moisturising Maria Nila shampoo. If you ever get too much cool tone, a few normal washes will fade it. We recommend consulting your hairdresser before use.
Why should I wear gloves and do a patch test?
Because Sheer Silver contains violet pigments (a semi-permeable dye), it can temporarily stain skin and nails, so gloves keep your hands clean during application. The pigments may also cause skin irritation in some individuals, so Maria Nila recommends a preliminary patch test as directed on the packaging before first use. It should never be used to dye eyelashes or eyebrows. These are standard precautions for any pigmented toning product.
Does it work on grey and white hair, not just blonde?
Yes — Sheer Silver is formulated for natural and coloured blonde, white, AND grey hair. Grey and white hair yellows over time from environmental factors and product build-up, and the violet pigments neutralise that yellowing exactly the same way, keeping silver and white hair crisp, cool, and bright rather than dull or brassy. It's a favourite for maintaining beautiful silver and grey.
