No. The VP/VA film-former that supplies hold 4 is plasticised by polyquaternium-68, a conditioning polymer that keeps the dried film flexible instead of brittle. Maria Nila state it brushes out without stickiness, and that is the mechanism behind it. Flaking usually comes from unplasticised film-formers, which this is not.
I have curls. Is this only a blow-dry product, or can I diffuse with it?
Yes, you can diffuse with it. Maria Nila list curl definition and flyaway control among its uses, and the flexible film gives curls shape without the crisp cast a gel leaves. Apply to damp hair, scrunch upward, then diffuse on low airflow. For tighter coils, the Coils & Curls range is more specialised.
Hold 4 sounds heavy for fine hair. Will it weigh my roots down?
No, because hold and weight are not the same thing. The film dries to a thin layer that resists compression, which is what lifts fine hair rather than loading it. Weight problems come from over-application — start with a golf-ball-sized amount for mid-length hair and add only if the shape drops.
Should I apply this to soaking wet hair straight out of the shower?
No. Towel-dry first until the hair is damp rather than dripping. Mousse dilutes into whatever water remains on the strand, so wet hair spreads the polymer too thin to build any real structure. This is the most common reason people find mousse underperforms for them.
Can I use it as a base before flat-ironing, or do I still need a separate heat protectant?
No, you still need one. Maria Nila position this as a base before straightening or curling, but it carries no thermal protection claim and no heat-protective ingredient. Apply the mousse to damp hair, follow with Shaping Heat Spray, then dry and iron. The two layers do different jobs.
