This is a working spray rather than a finishing one. At hold 2 of 5 the acrylates film stays soft and redispersible, so you can mist, brush, restyle and mist again without building a crust. The shine and the frizz control come from a separate silicone copolyol that flattens the cuticle — two different mechanisms doing two different jobs in one can.

The ingredients worth knowing.
- Two independent mechanisms share the can. Hold comes from acrylates copolymer neutralised in situ by aminomethyl propanol; at the low polymer load used here the dried film has enough cohesion to shape but remains soft and redispersible, which is why repeated brushing does not fracture it into flakes. Shine and frizz control come from PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone, a water-dispersible silicone copolyol that orients along the cuticle and lies flat over raised scales. Flattened scales reflect light specularly instead of scattering it, which is simultaneously why the hair looks glossier and why surface frizz reads as smooth. C15-19 alkane, a plant-derived cyclomethicone alternative, supplies slip and rapid volatilisation so nothing sits wet on a finished section.

Yes, brush freely. Maria Nila formulate it to be easy to brush out, and the acrylates copolymer is used at a low enough load that the dried film stays soft and redispersible rather than fracturing. Flaking comes from a dense, brittle film — the opposite of what hold 2 produces.
Maria Nila make four sprays. Where does Styling Spray sit against the other three?
Yes, there is a clear ladder. Styling Spray is hold 2 and the lightest they make. Finishing Spray is hold 4, strong but brushable. Extreme Spray is hold 5 and deliberately hard to brush out. Volume Spray is hold 4 but goes on damp hair, not dry. This one is the working spray you build with.
How does a hairspray add shine? I thought that needed an oil or a serum.
Yes, it works differently. PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone is a water-dispersible silicone copolyol that lies flat along the cuticle. Flattened scales reflect light in one direction instead of scattering it, which reads as shine. An oil adds shine by adding weight; this adds it optically, with none.
If I keep layering it through a blow-dry, will the buildup eventually feel heavy or sticky?
No, and layering is how Maria Nila intend it to be used. The film redisperses rather than stacking, so each pass integrates with the last instead of adding a new layer on top. C15-19 alkane speeds dry-down so nothing sits wet. It still washes out with one normal shampoo.
My frizz is the fine halo along the top of a straight blow-dry. Will hold 2 be strong enough to flatten it?
Yes, because that halo is a cuticle problem, not a hold problem. The silicone copolyol smooths the raised scales causing it, which is why the frizz settles even at a light hold. If the frizz runs through the whole length rather than the surface, Gloss Coat on damp hair tackles it at the source.
