What it does

  • Purple on light hair, burgundy on dark
  • High-saturation colour bomb, not a tonal refresh
  • Dilutes to a pastel lilac
  • Conditions processed hair while it deposits

Perfect for

  • Colour-treated hair
  • Levels 2 to 7; dilute on lighter bases

How to use

  1. Shampoo and towel-dry until damp. Apply barrier cream around the hairline and ears.
  2. Wearing gloves, apply neat on darker hair, or mix thoroughly in a bowl with an unpigmented masque for a softer result on lighter hair.
  3. Comb through evenly and leave 3-10 minutes.
  4. Rinse with cool water until it runs clear, then follow with conditioner.

Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

The genuinely useful thing to understand is that it does not look like one colour. A translucent violet deposit shows differently depending on what sits underneath it: on a pre-lightened base the blue reads clearly and you get purple, while on a level 4 or 5 brunette the underlying red-brown warmth shows through and the result reads burgundy or deep plum. Same tube, two outcomes, decided entirely by your starting base.

What’s inside — and why it’s there

The ingredients worth knowing.

  • A two-dye colour bomb - Basic Blue 99 and Basic Red 51 - which is the same pair as Pink Pop with the ratio swung toward blue. Fewer pigments at higher concentration rather than more pigments in balance, which is why Maria Nila flags dilution for lighter hair to avoid over-intensity or staining. Maria Nila also warns against using it before any bleach treatment, as remaining pigment can cause discolouration during lifting.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

Moda stylist tipStrand test on a hidden piece before you commit, and take the piece from where your hair is darkest, not lightest. Because violet reads purple over light hair and burgundy over dark, the result on your top layer tells you very little about what the underneath will do - and on most coloured heads those two zones are several levels apart. Testing the darkest section shows you the burgundy end of the outcome, which is the one people are least prepared for.

Ask Moda
Can I use this as a purple toner to cancel yellow in my blonde?

No. This is a colour bomb, not a toner - at this concentration it deposits visible purple rather than quietly neutralising yellow. Pearl Silver and Cool Cream carry violet-leaning pigment at toning strength and are the correct products for cancelling brass.

On level 4 brown, will I get purple or burgundy?

Yes, burgundy is the likely result. A translucent violet deposit shows what sits beneath it, and the red-brown warmth in a level 4 base reads through the violet as plum or burgundy. Clear purple needs a pre-lightened base for the blue to show cleanly.

I want lilac rather than deep purple. How do I get there?

Yes, that needs two things: a light base and heavy dilution. Mix a small amount into a generous quantity of unpigmented masque, as Maria Nila advises, and apply to pre-lightened hair. Diluting alone on a dark base gives a weak plum, not lilac.

As it washes out, does it go blue or pink?

Yes, a shift is normal - usually toward blue. Basic Blue 99 and Basic Red 51 have different molecular sizes and release at different rates, so the more persistent pigment dominates late in the cycle. On light hair that often shows as a cooler, greyer violet in the final washes.

I'm booked for highlights next month. When should I stop using this?

No fixed number of weeks, but stop well before and tell your colourist. Maria Nila warns against using Colour Refresh before bleach because remaining pigment can discolour during lifting. Allow the deposit to wash out fully - four to ten washes - and have your stylist strand test first.
