Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

This is the only one of the three Maria Nila dry shampoos that changes how the hair behaves. Hold 2 of 5 and a large-granule potato starch blend means it separates strands at the root rather than just absorbing oil. For fine hair that goes flat by noon, it replaces two steps — dry shampoo and texture spray — with one can.

What’s inside — and why it’s there

The ingredients worth knowing.

  • The volume is mechanical, not cosmetic. Potato starch granules are substantially larger than the rice starch used in Invisidry and Soothing Dry Shampoo, so they wedge between strands at the root and force physical separation — more space between fibres reads as more density. Aluminum starch octenylsuccinate carries a hydrophobic octenyl succinate group grafted onto the starch backbone, which sharply increases its affinity for sebum while producing a dry, slightly tacky surface rather than a slick one; that surface friction is what lets pins and elastics bite. Magnesium stearate supplies cling at the scalp, and silica holds absorbed oil in suspension so the matte finish lasts.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. Shake the can well.
  2. Spray onto dry roots section by section, or mist onto fingertips and press in.
  3. Leave a minute, then massage firmly at the scalp.
  4. Brush or shake out the excess and lift sections away from the scalp.
  5. For grip before an updo, apply to clean dry hair through roots and mid-lengths.

Moda stylist tipSpray it into clean dry roots the night before, massage in and sleep on it. The starch is already in place when the next day's sebum arrives, so it binds to the powder instead of the hair and you wake up with the lift built in.

The questions we hear most about this product. If yours isn’t here, a real stylist will answer.

Ask Moda
Can I use this on freshly washed hair as a texturiser, or is it only for greasy roots?

Yes, and Maria Nila formulate it for both. On clean dry hair it works as a pre-style base, adding grip and body before pins, braids or a half-up. The starch blend gives soft hair the surface friction it lacks. Apply through mid-lengths as well as roots when you are using it this way.

My hair is dark. Do I need to be more careful with this one than with Invisidry?

Yes, be more deliberate. Invisidry is the product Maria Nila specifically engineer to leave no trace on blonde and darker hair. This one is built around volume, so it lays down more powder. Mist onto fingertips, press into the part and massage thoroughly rather than spraying over the surface.

Will hold 2 be enough to keep a ponytail from sliding, or do I still need hairspray?

Yes for grip, no for hold. The modified starch creates surface friction so the elastic and pins bite instead of slipping, which solves the sliding. It has no fixative in it, so the finished shape still needs a spray over the top — Finishing Spray at hold 4 is the natural partner.

I already use a volume mousse at the blow-dry. Is this doing the same thing twice?

No. Mousse is a wet-stage product that sets structure into the hair as it dries, so it only works on wash day. This is a dry-stage powder that creates lift by wedging starch granules between strands, which is why it still works on day two or three. They solve the same problem at different points.

If I use it three days running, will the starch build up and make my hair feel coated?

Yes, eventually — any starch-based powder accumulates if it is layered without brushing out. Brush thoroughly between applications rather than spraying over yesterday's layer, and the finish stays matte instead of turning gritty. Two to three days is realistic before the hair genuinely wants a wash.
