Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

Maria Nila are honest about this one: it is hard to brush out, and that is the specification rather than a flaw. The amphoteric resin holds its rigidity as humidity climbs, which is what actually decides whether an updo survives a warm room. This is the can you buy for the wedding, not for Tuesday.

What’s inside — and why it’s there

The ingredients worth knowing.

  • The property that separates a hold 5 spray from a hold 4 is not raw stiffness but how the film behaves when it absorbs water. Octylacrylamide/acrylates/butylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer is amphoteric, carrying both acidic and basic groups; once neutralised with aminomethyl propanol it forms a film that retains its elastic modulus as ambient humidity rises, rather than plasticising and creeping the way simpler anionic resins do. That is why an updo set with it holds its position in a warm room. C12-15 alkyl benzoate is the external plasticiser that keeps the film tough rather than brittle, which is what prevents a high-load resin from shattering into visible white dust under movement. Tocopherol and the Colour Guard Complex add antioxidant and UV cover.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. Finish the style completely — this goes on last.
  2. Shake well and hold at least 30 cm from dry hair.
  3. Apply in short bursts, letting each pass dry before the next.
  4. For backcombed sections, spray the underside rather than the surface.
  5. Shampoo it out rather than brushing it out.

Moda stylist tipThree light passes from 30 cm, ten seconds apart, beat one long soak every time. Pooled resin is what dries into a visible white crust — and it holds worse, not better, than the same amount applied in thin layers.

Questions? We get them.

Good to know.

The questions we hear most about this product. If yours isn’t here, a real stylist will answer.

Ask Moda
How do I get this out at the end of the night if it is hard to brush out?

No brushing — shampoo it out. The resin film is designed to resist mechanical removal, so forcing a brush through dry hair risks snapping strands rather than releasing the film. Wet the hair thoroughly, shampoo once, and comb through with conditioner on. It clears in a single wash.

My hairspray always leaves white specks on a black dress. Will this one?

No, if you apply it in thin passes. C12-15 alkyl benzoate plasticises the film so it stays tough rather than brittle, which is what stops fracturing. White specks almost always come from resin pooling where the spray was held too close — keep 30 cm of distance and use short bursts.

I am getting married outdoors in July. Will humidity drop my updo even with hold 5?

No, this is the specific problem the resin is chosen for. Amphoteric copolymers of this type retain their film rigidity as atmospheric moisture rises, where simpler anionic resins soften and let the shape creep downward. Build the style on a mousse base and spray the backcombed underside for the best result.

Extreme and Finishing look almost identical on the ingredient list. Is there a real difference?

Yes. They share the same resin family, but Maria Nila rate Extreme at hold 5 and Finishing at hold 4, and the practical difference is stated plainly: Extreme is hard to brush out, Finishing is easy to brush out. Resin load, not resin choice, is what separates them.

Is hold 5 going to make my hair feel like a helmet if I wear it down?

Yes, most likely — and that is not what it is built for. A film strong enough to hold backcombing will read as stiff on loose hair that is meant to move. Use Styling Spray at hold 2 for hair worn down, and keep this can for pinned and structured styles.
