It softens the beard hair and prepares the skin before the shaving cream goes on. Beard hair is significantly coarser than head hair and cuts more cleanly when softened. The emollient actives also create a first layer of skin protection before the blade makes contact, reducing the friction that causes razor burn.
Do I really need a pre-shave step, or is it just extra product?
If you have ever had razor burn, ingrown hairs or post-shave irritation, the prep step is likely what was missing. Beard hair is among the coarsest hair on the body. Cutting it without softening first means the blade has to work harder, which creates more friction and skin damage. Two to three minutes of prep time changes the shave completely.
How long do I leave RICA Barber Prep Emulsion on before shaving?
Two to three minutes minimum. Apply, leave it to work while you wash your face or finish your shower, then apply the Beard Smooth Shaving Cream on top. The softening happens during the wait — not during the application.
Do I rinse RICA Barber Prep Emulsion off before applying the shaving cream?
No — apply the Beard Smooth Shaving Cream directly over the Barber Prep Emulsion without rinsing. The two work together — the emulsion softens and the cream lubricates and protects.
