The key difference is finish and texture. No. 301 is a paste with a pure flat matte and strong hold — no shine at all. No. 302 is a clay pomade with a demi-matte finish that carries a slight natural sheen and uses Kaolin clay to add texture and volume, particularly effective on fine to medium hair that needs body alongside definition.
I have thick, coarse hair. Will No. 302 give me enough hold or should I use No. 301 instead?
For thick, coarse hair that needs serious hold, No. 301 Matt Paste is likely the stronger choice. No. 302 works well on medium-thickness hair and delivers meaningful hold, but the Kaolin clay formula is most beneficial where texture and volume are the primary goals alongside hold.
Can I mix No. 302 with No. 301 for a custom result?
Yes. Mixing DEPOT® styling products in the palm is a legitimate technique. A blend of No. 302 (demi-matte, texture) and No. 301 (pure matte, strong hold) gives a result between the two: stronger hold than No. 302 alone with more texture than No. 301 alone.
I've used clay products before that left my hair feeling dry and brittle over time. Will No. 302 do that?
No. The Kaolin clay in No. 302 is balanced with Glycerin and an 11-plant Botanical Complex that conditions the hair fibre. The UV filter also protects from the dehydrating effect of sun exposure. Unlike clay products that use high kaolin concentrations without conditioning support, No. 302 is formulated for regular use without drying out the hair.
Does No. 302 work on wet or dry hair?
Dry hair only for best results. The Kaolin clay emulsifies and distributes most effectively when applied to dry hair — it builds texture and matte body through the hair fibre. Apply to towel-dried hair at minimum; fully dry hair gives the most accurate result for hold and finish.
