Pre-shave preparation significantly reduces irritation and improves the closeness of the shave. No. 401 softens the beard hair and conditions the skin before the razor makes contact, reducing friction and the mechanical stress that causes razor burn and ingrown hairs. The Olive Oil and Sweet Almond Oil create a barrier that helps the razor glide rather than drag.
Can I use No. 401 as my only shaving product, or does it need to be used with a shaving cream?
No. 401 is a skin protector designed as a pre-shave prep before a shaving product such as No. 404 Soothing Shaving Soap or No. 403 Pre-Shave & Softening Beard Oil. It doesn't create lather or provide the lubrication needed for the actual shave. Apply No. 401, let it absorb briefly, then follow with your chosen shaving product.
I have very sensitive skin that gets red and irritated after shaving. Will No. 401 help with that?
Yes — reducing post-shave redness on sensitive skin is one of No. 401's core functions. DEPOT® specifically developed it for all skin types including the most sensitive. The Olive Oil and Sweet Almond Oil are non-irritating and deeply emollient. Used before and after shaving, it creates a protective and soothing barrier at both ends of the shave.
Is No. 401 only for face shaving or can it be used for head shaving or body areas too?
It can be used wherever skin preparation and post-shave care is needed — head shaving is a common use. The formula contains no ingredients that restrict it to facial use. The emollient and soothing properties are equally beneficial on the scalp or neck as on the face.
I already use an aftershave balm after shaving. Do I still need No. 401, or does the balm cover the post-shave step?
The pre-shave step is the more important one that most people miss entirely. Using No. 401 before shaving and your existing aftershave balm after shaving is a logical combination. Adding No. 401 as a pre-shave step alone — even without replacing your existing aftershave — will typically produce a noticeable improvement in comfort during and after the shave.
