Yes — the three waxes sit at different hold levels. Sculpting Wax is 3/5 (medium, flexible, moisturising, natural finish), Fixating Wax is 4/5 (firm, matte, for control and taming), and Extreme Wax is 5/5 (maximum hold, medium shine, for spikes and defined styles). Choose the Fixating Wax when you want firm, matte, long-lasting control — especially for taming unruly short hair — but don't need the absolute maximum hold of the Extreme Wax.
Can it tame a cowlick or hair that grows the wrong way?
Yes — this is one of its specific strengths. Maria Nila recommends the Fixating Wax for short hair that grows in the opposite direction to how you want it to sit. Its firm, quick-drying hold locks the hair down where you direct it. Apply a small amount directly to the problem area, work it in the direction you want the hair to go, and let it set. The matte, quick-dry finish holds it there without looking greasy.
Is the finish shiny or matte?
Matte. The Fixating Wax has a low-shine, matte finish, so it controls and defines without a wet or greasy look. This makes it a good choice for natural, everyday styling where you want the hold but not the shine. If you want a bit of shine with your hold, the Extreme Wax has a medium shine instead.
Does it flake or leave residue?
Used correctly, no. The key is warming a small amount between your palms to activate it before applying, and not overloading the hair — a little goes a long way. Applied this way, it distributes evenly and holds cleanly without flaking. Using too much of any firm wax can cause build-up, so start small and add if needed. It washes out easily with your regular shampoo.
