Moda stylist tipIt's a toning treatment, so contact time is the control and less is often more — start 3–5 minutes and check, as on very pale or porous blonde it can over-tone (violet or grey cast) if left too long. Build up only if needed. Strand-test, wear gloves. For gentler everyday maintenance, the Sheer Silver purple shampoo/conditioner keeps blonde cool between treatments. Won't lighten; tell your colourist before bleaching.

Ask ModaHow is Pearl Silver different from a purple shampoo?
They both neutralise brass, but at different strengths and roles. A purple shampoo (like Maria Nila's Sheer Silver) is for gentle, everyday maintenance — a little cool tone with each wash. Pearl Silver is a colour-depositing toning treatment, so it delivers a stronger, deeper dose of cool silver-violet pigment to properly neutralise yellow and brass, plus it conditions the hair as a mask. Use Pearl Silver for a periodic deeper tone-down (every week or two), and a purple shampoo in between for daily upkeep. Together they keep blonde consistently cool.
Can I over-tone with it, and how do I avoid a grey or violet cast?
Yes, over-toning is possible — because it's a pigmented treatment, leaving it on too long (especially on very pale, porous, or damaged blonde) can leave a faint grey or violet cast. To avoid it: start with a short contact time of 3–5 minutes, rinse, and check the result, only reapplying or leaving longer if you need more neutralising. A strand test first is the safest way to gauge timing for your hair. If you ever do over-tone, a couple of normal washes will fade it back.
Does it work on grey and white hair?
Yes — Pearl Silver is beautiful for maintaining silver, grey, and white hair. These tones naturally yellow over time from environmental factors and product build-up, and the silver-violet pigments neutralise that yellowing to keep grey and white hair crisp, cool, and bright. It also conditions, which grey hair (often drier and coarser) appreciates. Note it tones existing grey/white hair rather than covering it — Colour Refresh doesn't cover grey, it enhances and cools the tone you have.
Can I bleach over it later?
Always tell your hairdresser if you've used Colour Refresh before any bleaching or lightening. Even though Pearl Silver is a semi-permanent toner, residual pigment can remain in the hair and affect a bleach or lightening result, so your colourist needs to know to plan the service. It's not damaging — it's a conditioning treatment — but the pigment information matters for future colour work.
