How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. Apply to wet hair and gently massage through hair and scalp.
  2. Leave in for 1 minute before rinsing.
  3. Follow with your favourite hair mask and conditioner. Use in place of your regular shampoo every 8th wash or about once a month.

Moda stylist tipA monthly (or every-8th-wash) reset, not an everyday shampoo. Apply to wet hair, massage through, leave 1 minute so the acids work, rinse. A deep clean can leave hair wanting moisture, so always follow with a mask or conditioner. It's the ideal reset before a treatment — the hair absorbs it better on a clean base.

Ask Moda
How often should I use a clarifying shampoo?

Maria Nila recommends using the Purifying Cleanse Shampoo in place of your regular shampoo about every 8th wash, or roughly once a month. It's a deep-cleansing reset rather than an everyday shampoo — using a clarifying shampoo too often can strip the hair of moisture. Once a month (or more often if you use a lot of styling products or have very oily hair or hard water) keeps build-up in check without over-cleansing. Always follow it with a mask or conditioner.

Will it strip or dry out my hair?

Less than a traditional clarifying shampoo. It uses AHA and Glycolic Acid to exfoliate and Glacier Water to lift build-up, which is a gentler mechanism than the harsh sulphate surfactants in old-school clarifiers. It's also sulphate- and silicone-free. That said, any deep clean removes oils, so your hair may feel a little drier straight after — that's why you always follow with a hair mask or conditioner to restore moisture. Used monthly as directed, it refreshes without over-drying.

Is it good for colour-treated hair?

Yes, used occasionally. Colour-treated hair benefits from clearing build-up (which can make colour look dull), and being sulphate-free, it's gentler on colour than a harsh clarifier. Because any deep clean can affect colour vibrancy slightly, keep it to the recommended monthly reset rather than frequent use, follow with a mask, and use a colour-protecting range like Luminous Colour for your everyday washes.

Do I need the Exfoliating Serum too?

They work well together but serve slightly different purposes. The Shampoo deep-cleans the hair and scalp in the shower. The Exfoliating Serum is a 10-minute pre-shampoo scalp treatment with 5% glycolic acid that more intensively exfoliates the scalp itself — ideal if you specifically have a flaky, itchy, or oily scalp. For a full scalp detox, use the Serum first (10 minutes, then rinse), followed by the Purifying Cleanse Shampoo. For general build-up on the hair, the Shampoo alone is enough.

Is Maria Nila vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes — 100% vegan and cruelty-free, certified by PETA, Leaping Bunny, and The Vegan Society. Maria Nila is a Swedish brand and a Certified B Corporation, developing and manufacturing in Sweden with sulphate-, paraben-, and silicone-free formulas and CO2-compensated packaging.
