No — they are different products for different finish styles. Night Rider is the strongest paste with a 90-second working window; it sets firmly on contact and creates a rough matte texture. Rough Rider is a clay with a more moldable, gritty texture and slightly more working time. Night Rider is for maximum directional hold; Rough Rider is for gritty, textured styling with more flexibility.
Can Night Rider be used on longer hair?
Yes — Kevin Murphy confirms Night Rider works on a variety of hair lengths. On longer hair it creates separation, texture and a matte finish rather than the directional hold it creates on short hair. Apply to dry hair in small amounts and work section by section for the most controlled result.
What happens if I need more time to style after the 90-second window?
Yes — add heat. Kevin Murphy’s instruction is that if you need to soften the hold at any point to re-mould, apply heat from a dryer. The Beeswax softens with heat, making the hold pliable again. This is the correct technique rather than adding more product, which creates buildup.
Is Night Rider a matte or glossy finish?
No — Night Rider is specifically a matte finish. Kevin Murphy describes it as delivering rough matte texture. For a natural or glossy finish with similar hold level, Free Hold with its Carnauba Wax is the appropriate alternative.
Does Night Rider build up in the hair or wash out easily?
No — the Beeswax-based formula washes out cleanly with a thorough shampoo. On days where buildup is a concern, Kevin Murphy’s Maxi Wash (the detox shampoo) clears any wax residue completely. Avoid applying additional product over Night Rider to prevent buildup — use heat to re-mould instead.
