Ask ModaHow do I choose between the brown shades?
Maria Nila's browns differ by depth and warmth. Caramel Brown is warm and golden — for warming up brown and refreshing caramel balayage. Beige Brown is cooler and softer — for a neutral-to-cool brown or toning down warmth. Cacao is a neutral medium brown, and Cacao Intense is a deep dark brown. Choose Caramel Brown when you want warmth and richness in brown or golden brunette hair; choose Beige Brown to cool it down, or Cacao/Cacao Intense for neutral medium-to-dark brown. You can also mix shades to fine-tune.
Is it good for refreshing balayage?
Yes — it's excellent for caramel and warm-brown balayage. Balayage lightens the mid-lengths and ends to warm, caramel tones that fade and can go brassy or flat over time. Applying Caramel Brown just through the balayage areas (mid-lengths and ends) re-deposits that warm golden tone and revives the dimension between salon visits. Use gloves, apply where the balayage sits, and leave 3–10 minutes depending on how much warmth you want back. A strand test helps you gauge the timing.
Will it lighten my hair or cover grey?
No to both. It only deposits warm brown tone — it can't lighten, as it has no bleach. And the semi-permanent pigments don't cover grey (results on grey vary and aren't recommended). Caramel Brown refreshes and warms existing brown and brunette colour; it works best on already-coloured or light-to-medium brown hair. On virgin or very light hair the effect may be minimal or uneven, so a strand test is important first.
Is it damaging, and can I bleach over it later?
It's not damaging — it's a conditioning treatment with Argan Oil, Provitamin B5, and nourishing ingredients that leaves hair soft and glossy. But always tell your hairdresser if you've used Colour Refresh before any bleaching or lightening. Even semi-permanent brown pigment can remain in the hair and affect a bleach result, so your colourist needs to know to plan the service correctly.
