Ask ModaShould I choose the Ocean Spray or the Salty Mist?
Choose by how much texture and hold you want. The Ocean Spray has a high salt concentration, giving stronger 3/5 hold, more defined and gritty texture, a matte finish, and enough grip to prep updos and braids. The Salty Mist has less salt, giving softer, more natural waves with a light 2/5 hold. Go for the Ocean Spray if you want strong, structured beach texture or an updo base; go for the Salty Mist if you want soft, undone, everyday waves. They're the strong and gentle versions of the same idea.
Why is it good for updos and braids?
Yes — this is one of its standout uses. The high salt content gives the hair a matte, gritty texture and grip, which is exactly what makes updos, braids, and twists hold. Smooth, slippery hair lets pins slide out and styles fall; textured hair grips onto itself and onto pins. Spray the Ocean Spray through dry hair before you start styling to add that grip, then build your updo or braid — it'll hold far better and last longer. Finish with the Extreme Spray for a firm lock.
Does it leave hair stiff or sticky?
It has a matte, non-sticky finish, so it's not tacky, but because it's the stronger salt spray it can leave hair feeling a little stiff if you use too much (as one reviewer with straight hair found). The trick is to start with a light application and build up, and to scrunch the hair to break up any stiffness into soft, defined texture. If you prefer no stiffness at all, the Salty Mist is softer. Mixing in a little Argan Oil also keeps it from feeling too crisp.
Does it protect my hair and colour?
Yes — despite being a salt spray, it's formulated with the Colour Guard Complex, which protects colour from fading caused by UV and free radicals, and it even offers some heat protection. Sunflower Seed Extract adds antioxidant protection too. So while salt can be drying, the Ocean Spray builds in protective, nourishing ingredients. For extra moisture on dry or colour-treated ends, mix in a little True Soft Argan Oil.
