The Living Proof PhD Shampoo is built around the brand’s proprietary Healthy Hair Molecule (PBAE), a coating technology that does what silicone was always supposed to do but does not: it smooths the cuticle, makes hair feel soft and shiny, and does not accumulate. Regular silicone-based shampoos produce a nice result for the first few washes then progressively build up, making hair heavier, flatter and duller until a clarifying wash resets everything. The PBAE technology does not build up — which means the fifth wash looks as good as the first.
