Why we like it

The Moda Team Review

Some frizzy hair needs more than a conditioner to smooth properly. Smooth Over delivers it — a concentrated weekly treatment that resets the hair surface and makes the daily system work noticeably better for the rest of the week.

Read full stylist notes

The client who uses the Velveteen Dream daily system but still finds their hair going puffy by day two. Adding Smooth Over once a week resets the hair surface more deeply than the conditioner can in 3 minutes, and the daily smoothing results last longer as a result. Amika developed Smooth Over as the intensive weekly anchor of both the Velveteen Dream and Forget Frizz systems — a shared product that does the deepest smoothing work either system offers.

How to use

Use it the way we would.

  1. After shampooing, apply to towel-blotted hair mid-lengths to ends in place of conditioner. Leave 5-10 minutes. Rinse. Style as usual.

Moda stylist tipTowel-blot before applying. The concentrated actives penetrate significantly better on damp than saturated hair. 5 minutes done right outperforms 10 minutes done wrong.

Questions? We get them.

Good to know.

The questions we hear most about this product. If yours isn’t here, a real stylist will answer.

Ask Moda
How is Smooth Over different from just leaving the regular conditioner on longer?

Yes — Smooth Over has a higher concentration of smoothing actives than the daily conditioner. More time with the regular conditioner gives you slightly more conditioning; Smooth Over delivers genuinely more intensive cuticle sealing that the daily conditioner can't match regardless of time.

How long should I leave Smooth Over on?

Yes — 5–10 minutes for the concentrated smoothing treatment. For very frizzy or coarse hair, leave on for 15–20 minutes under a shower cap. The intensive smoothing agents need more contact time than a rinse-out conditioner to work fully.

Should I use Smooth Over with Velveteen Dream or Forget Frizz?

Yes — Smooth Over is shared across both frizz systems. It works with either shampoo as the weekly intensive conditioner replacement. Use it as the treatment step in whichever daily system you're on.

Is Smooth Over better for thick or fine frizzy hair?

Yes — for thick or medium frizzy hair, Smooth Over delivers excellent results. For fine frizzy hair, apply carefully to ends only and use a shorter time. Fine hair that finds Smooth Over too heavy may do better with Frizz-Me-Not leave-in treatment instead.

Can I use Smooth Over more than once a week if my hair is very frizzy?

Yes — twice weekly is appropriate for very coarse or extremely frizzy hair in a high-humidity environment. Most hair types find once a week sufficient. If hair starts to feel heavy, reduce to every two weeks.
