Skipping the shake means the heavier oil phase dominates, creating a greasy result. That complaint is almost entirely a technique issue, not a formula issue. 2–4 sprays from 15–20cm, can moving. For fine hair: 1–2 sprays only. For extensions: mist and leave — don't work through.

Ask ModaWhat is a bi-phase formula and why do I need to shake before every use?
A bi-phase formula contains two components that don't mix on their own — in this case a reparative serum phase and a lightweight oil phase. They separate naturally on standing, like oil and water. Shaking the bottle forces them to temporarily emulsify into a uniform mist. Each spray needs to be shaken immediately before use, not just at the beginning of a session — the phases re-separate between sprays. Skipping the shake means one phase dominates the spray, usually the oil, which creates the greasy result clients sometimes report with mists. The shake is the technique.
What is the difference between this and the OLAPLEX Nº.7 Bonding Oil?
The Nº.7 Bonding Oil is applied to damp hair before blow-drying — a pre-style treatment that delivers 125% more shine and 72-hour frizz control while styling with heat. The °7 Shine Serum Oil Mist is applied to dry, already-styled hair post-blowout or between washes — a finishing step that delivers 96-hour shine and hydration with the option of heat protection for touch-ups. Different format, different timing, different result — designed to work together, not to replace each other.
Will the Shine Serum Oil Mist make fine hair look greasy or flat?
Not if applied correctly. The formula uses ultra-lightweight Kalahari Melon Seed Oil and Kukui Nut Oil specifically chosen for their non-greasy, rapid-absorbing properties. For fine hair: 1–2 sprays maximum, held 20–30cm from dry hair with the can moving rather than held stationary, focused on mid-lengths and ends only — never the roots. The biggest risk of flatness is applying too much or holding the can too close to one area.
Is the Shine Serum Oil Mist safe for colour-treated, extension, and chemically processed hair?
Yes — OLAPLEX specifically confirms this product is colour safe, extension safe, and suitable for chemically treated hair. It is also dermatologist tested, vegan, and free of alcohol, protein, sulphates, SLS/SLES, phthalates, phosphates, MIC/MIT, and parabens.
Can I use the Shine Serum Oil Mist to protect my hair from heat when doing touch-up styling?
Yes — it provides heat protection to 450°F / 232°C when applied before heat tools. Applied to dry hair before a touch-up with a flat iron or curling iron, it both refreshes the shine and hydration and protects against the heat damage from the touch-up styling.
